Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE OF THE BROKENBefore I could process the devastating truth about Clara, the front security monitors on my desk flashed red.

A sleek, black-tinted Mercedes Maybach had just bypassed our perimeter gates, its license plates unregistered in our visitor database. It rolled smoothly up the winding gravel driveway and came to a halt right outside the front portico.
I walked swiftly into the study, pulling up the exterior camera feed on my master computer.
The rear door of the Maybach opened, and a woman stepped out into the rain. She was wearing a sharp, charcoal-gray trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a severe chignon, her face pale but strikingly composed despite the downpour. She carried no umbrella, yet she walked toward my front door with the unhesitating authority of someone who owned the property.
It wasn't Clara.
It was Dr. Elena Vance—the brilliant, ruthless endocrinologist and director of NovaGenics who Ethan had mentioned upstairs.
Before I could reach the front door, the heavy oak panels swung open. Dr. Vance had bypassed my biometric locks using a master override code—the exact same digital signature Ethan must have provided her.
She stepped into the foyer, shaking the rain from her trench coat, and looked around with clinical detachment before her eyes landed on me as I emerged from the study.
"Julian Vance," she said, her voice crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of fear. "I assume your brother has already filled you in on the broad strokes of our little corporate arrangement."
I walked down the grand staircase, my expression cold and menacing. "You broke into my genetic vault. You partnered with a thief to traffic biological material."
"I partnered with a man who legally held administrative keys to a dormant portfolio," Dr. Vance corrected smoothly, stepping further into the foyer. She glanced over at the laundry basket where my son was sleeping, and for a split second, a flicker of genuine human emotion softened her hard features. "Though I admit, Ethan’s execution leaves much to be desired. Leaving a baby on a doorstep in a trash bag? That was crude. Desperate. And frankly, bad for public relations."
"Why are you here, Elena?" I demanded, stopping three steps above her on the staircase so I could look down into her eyes. "If you're here to negotiate a settlement for Ethan's debts, you're wasting your time. He's going to federal prison for embezzlement and biological trafficking."
Dr. Vance let out a low, humorless laugh. "Prison? Julian, do you really think Ethan cares about prison? By the time the federal marshals finish sorting through the shell companies, Ethan will be sipping cocktails in a non-extradition country with ten million dollars in cryptocurrency."
She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out a heavy gold flash drive, and held it up between her fingers.
"Unless, of course, you prefer to deal with someone who actually understands how to clean up a mess," she said quietly.
"What is on that drive?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"Everything," she replied. "Every financial ledger of Ethan’s embezzlement. Every illegal client list from NovaGenics. Every document proving how your genetic material was weaponized against you. And most importantly... proof of where Clara Montgomery is right now."

My breath hitched. "Clara is alive?"
Dr. Vance nodded slowly. "She’s alive. But she’s being held in a private sanitarium in Zurich, heavily medicated under a false identity by the very syndicate Ethan sold his debts to. If you want your son’s mother back, Mr. Vance, you aren't going to solve this with fists or lawyers. You’re going to need a partner who wants to watch Ethan burn just as badly as you do."
