Chapter 4 - The PICU Trap

Back at Dallas Children's Hospital, the lights in Room 408 were dimmed.

Sophie lay beneath a warm white blanket, an IV drip pumping intravenous antibiotics and fluids directly into her small arm. Oxygen tubing rested under her nose, her breathing slightly less labored now that the medical team had begun aggressive treatment for severe bilateral pneumonia.

Alejandro sat in the plastic armchair beside her bed, his head resting against the edge of the mattress, holding her tiny hand. He hadn't slept in twenty-four hours. His eyes were red-rimmed, his suit jacket discarded on a nearby chair.

The door softly clicked open.

Valerie stepped into the room, holding two paper cups from the hospital coffee shop down the hall. Her face was smoothed back into its customary mask of gentle, loving concern.

"Alejandro, sweetie," Valerie whispered softly, walking over to set one of the cups on the bedside table. "You look exhausted. I brought you some chamomile tea. Why don't you go down to the chapel or the waiting room and close your eyes for twenty minutes? I’ll sit right here and watch Sophie."

Alejandro looked up at her. In the dim light of the heart monitor, he looked at his wife’s beautiful face—the face he had kissed every morning for six months—and felt a sudden, profound wave of revulsion.

He looked down at the paper cup of tea.

"Thanks, Valerie," Alejandro said slowly, his voice raspy. "I appreciate it."

He didn't touch the cup.

Valerie sat down in the chair on the opposite side of the bed. She reached out her manicured hand, gently stroking Sophie’s dark hair back from her forehead. To anyone looking through the small window in the door, she looked like a devoted stepmother keeping vigil over her sick child.

"The doctor said her blood work came back strange," Alejandro said quietly, staring at the heart monitor. "They found elevated levels of heavy metals and strange chemical sedatives in her system. They’re running a full toxicology screen right now."

Valerie’s hand froze mid-stroke on Sophie’s head. For a fraction of a second, her jaw clenched tight.

"Toxicology?" Valerie said, forcing a nervous chuckle. "That’s... that’s ridiculous. It must be a mistake with the hospital’s lab equipment. Children pick up all kinds of strange things at school or from playing in the yard."

"She hasn't been to school in three weeks, Valerie," Alejandro said, turning his head to look directly into her eyes. "She’s been in her bed. In our house. Eating only what you brought her."

Valerie straightened her spine, her posture stiffening. "Are you accusing me of something, Alejandro? After everything I’ve given up for this family? I quit my career at the branch office to stay home and care for your sister's orphaned child! And this is the gratitude I get? Suspicion?"

Before Alejandro could answer, the door of Room 408 swung wide open.

Elena marched into the room, carrying her heavy leather bag in one hand and the rose-gold iPad in the other. Behind her stood Dr. Claudia Harris, two hospital security guards, and two armed Dallas Police officers in dark blue uniforms.

Valerie stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floorboards. "What is the meaning of this?! This is an ICU room! She needs quiet!"

"Shut your mouth, Valerie," Elena said, her voice dropping like a heavy iron blade.

Elena walked straight to the bedside table, picked up the paper cup of tea Valerie had just brought for Alejandro, and handed it directly to one of the police officers.

"Seal this for chemical analysis," Elena commanded. "She likely laced it with sedatives to knock my son out."

"Are you insane?!" Valerie shrieked, backing away toward the window. "Alejandro, do something! Your mother has completely lost her mind! She’s attacking me!"

Alejandro stood up slowly, stepping between Valerie and the bed, completely shielding Sophie with his body. "Mom... what did you find?"

Elena laid the zip-top plastic bags onto the medical rolling tray at the foot of the bed.

The glass eyedropper bottle of antimony. The crushed peppermint and sedative bottles. The un-dispensed box of amoxicillin. The long sewing pins.

And finally, Elena placed the rose-gold iPad on the table and tapped the screen.

The room fell dead silent as the audio recording began to play through the tablet's high-definition speakers:

"Drink it, you little brat. Drink every drop... You're just a dead woman's baggage..."

Dr. Harris gasped, covering her mouth with both hands in absolute horror. The two police officers exchanged a sharp, grim look.

Valerie’s face turned from pale white to a mottled, terrifying shade of purplish rage. The polished, elegant facade she had worn for six months completely disintegrated, revealing the cold, predatory sociopath beneath.

"You meddling old hag," Valerie spat, her voice dropping into a raspy, bitter snarl as she glared at Elena. "You had no right to go through my private belongings! That tablet was my personal property!"

"You tried to murder my granddaughter for a five-million-dollar trust fund," Elena said, her eyes cold as steel as she stepped right into Valerie’s space. "You spiked her food, you poisoned her drinks, you stuck needles in her bed, and you tried to starve her lungs of oxygen while lying to my son's face every single morning."

"She was nothing!" Valerie screamed, completely breaking down as she backed against the glass window. "She was a miserable, whiny little parasite! Alejandro was supposed to be mine! His money, his business, his life—it was all supposed to be mine! Why should a dead woman’s bastard child get everything while I had to play nursemaid?!"

Alejandro didn't scream. He didn't raise his fist.

He walked slowly across the room until he was standing three inches from Valerie. The sheer rage radiating from his large frame was so suffocating that Valerie instinctively shrank back against the glass, her eyes wide with sudden, genuine fear.

"If you ever speak my sister's name, or my daughter's name, ever again," Alejandro said in a low, terrifying whisper that vibrated through the room, "I will spend every single dollar I own to make sure you rot in the darkest cell this state has to offer."

The lead police officer stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Valerie Vance," the officer announced firmly, grabbing her wrists and pulling them behind her back. "You are under arrest for attempted capital murder of a minor, aggravated child abuse by endangerment, and illegal administration of controlled toxic substances. You have the right to remain silent..."

May you like

As the steel cuffs clicked shut over her manicured wrists, Valerie began to thrash and scream, her high heels kicking wildly against the floor as the officers dragged her out into the hallway in front of dozens of stunned doctors, nurses, and patients.

"Alejandro! You can't do this to me!" her voice echoed down the corridor, fading into the distance. "I’m your wife! You hear me?! I’m your wife!"
