Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

The fallout from Valerie’s arrest tore through the city of Dallas like a Texas tornado.

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Dallas Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division and Special Victims Unit executed a sweeping search warrant on every asset, account, and computer associated with Valerie Vance.

What they uncovered revealed that "Valerie Vance" was not even her real name.

Sitting in a private conference room at the Dallas Police Headquarters, Alejandro, Elena, and their family attorney, Robert Vance (no relation), met with Detective Mark Vance.

Detective Vance opened a thick black case folder and spread several crime scene photos and state identity documents across the oak table.

"Her real name is Victoria Sterling," Detective Vance explained, pointing to a mugshot taken eight years ago in Oklahoma. "She’s thirty-four years old, not twenty-eight. She’s a serial financial predator with a long history of targeting wealthy, single widowers or single fathers."

Alejandro stared at the mugshot in disbelief. The woman in the picture had dark hair and a thin face, completely different from the polished blonde woman he had married six months ago.

"In 2018," Detective Vance continued, "she married a wealthy contractor in Tulsa whose wife had passed away from cancer. Within nine months of their marriage, the contractor’s ten-year-old son developed mysterious neurological symptoms and fell into a coma. Victoria successfully convinced the father to transfer his estate into a joint trust before she skipped town with $1.2 million in liquidated assets. The child survived only because the grandmother intervened—just like your mother did."

"Why wasn't she in prison?!" Alejandro demanded, slamming his fist onto the table.

"She used stolen identities, fake social security numbers, and heavy cosmetic surgery," Detective Vance said grimly. "She targeted men who were grieving, vulnerable, and overwhelmed with balancing work and single parenthood. She presented herself as the perfect replacement mother, gained total control over the household routine, and then systematically created medical emergencies to isolate the child and control the estate."

"And the medical supplies?" Elena asked sharply. "Where was she getting industrial antimony and prescription sedatives?"

"Her brother runs an illegal online pharmaceutical distribution network out of Houston," Detective Vance revealed. "Federal agents raided his warehouse three hours ago. He’s already singing like a canary to avoid a life sentence. He confirmed that Victoria ordered the heavy metal drops four months ago, explicitly asking for something that would simulate severe respiratory distress in a minor without triggering standard basic blood panels."

Attorney Robert Vance leaned forward, placing a hand on Alejandro’s arm. "Alejandro, the District Attorney has already filed formal charges: Attempted Capital Murder of a Child under 12, First-Degree Injury to a Child with Intent to Cause Serious Bodily Harm, and Forgery of Estate Documents. Under Texas law, given the premeditated nature and toxicological evidence, she is facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole."

Alejandro closed his eyes, leaning back in his chair. A profound, heavy silence filled the room.

"What about the annulment?" Alejandro asked softly.

"The marriage was fraudulent from day one," Attorney Vance declared firmly. "I filed emergency annulment papers this morning based on identity fraud and criminal intent. The judge signed the order two hours ago. Legally, as far as the State of Texas is concerned, she was never your wife. Her name has been permanently expunged from your deed, your accounts, and your life."

Elena reached across the table, taking Alejandro’s large hand into her own.

"It’s over, son," Elena said softly, her eyes brimming with warm, triumphant tears. "The snake has been thrown out of the house. Now, we go home and help our girl heal."
