Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, golden fingers across the glass and steel canyons of Wall Street. But inside the executive boardroom of Vance Global Enterprises, the atmosphere was as dark and cold as a winter tomb.

The long mahogany table—usually reserved for hostile takeovers and billion-dollar mergers—was packed with senior partners, federal investigators, board directors, and legal counsel.

At the head of the table sat Dominic Vance. His expression was mask-like, cold, and utterly terrifying. To his right sat Margaret Vance, looking every bit the matriarch of an empire. And to Dominic’s left, seated in a high-backed leather chair with a stack of forensic files before her, was Ella Marsh.

The heavy oak doors opened, and federal marshals escorted Vivienne Ashford into the room.

She looked entirely different from the glittering socialite of the birthday party twenty-four hours ago. Her hair was pulled back into a messy knot, her designer dress wrinkled, her face pale and sunken with panic. When she saw Ella sitting comfortably among the elite board members, a feral snarl twisted her lips.

“You!” Vivienne shrieked, lunging forward before the marshals hauled her back by her shoulders. “You set me up! You filthy little servant! You ruined my life!”

“Sit down, Vivienne,” Dominic commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it vibrated through the boardroom with such absolute authority that Vivienne instantly collapsed into the nearest chair, sobbing hysterically.

Dominic slid a thick document across the mahogany table toward her.

“This,” Dominic said smoothly, “is the official indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Southern District of New York. Charges include interstate wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate espionage, securities manipulation, and grand larceny exceeding ten million dollars.”

Vivienne stared at the papers, her vision blurring with tears of rage and disbelief. “You can’t do this to me! We were going to be married! We were a power couple!”

“We were never a couple,” Dominic corrected, his voice devoid of any human emotion. “You were an investment portfolio that turned out to be counterfeit. And according to the forensic audit compiled by Miss Marsh—” Dominic gestured toward Ella with a respectful nod “—every single dollar you embezzled from the subsidiary accounts has already been frozen, seized, and redirected back into the Vance Foundation.”

Vivienne’s head snapped toward Ella, her eyes wide with a mixture of hatred and sheer incomprehension. “Her? An auditor? She cleaned toilets! She washed my dishes! How could she—?”

“My grandmother taught me that true intelligence doesn't need to shout to be heard,” Ella said, standing up slowly from her chair. She looked down at Vivienne with a gaze so steady, so profoundly calm, that Vivienne shrank back into her seat.

Ella opened her portfolio and placed a single sheet of paper on the table right in front of Vivienne.

“You thought I was invisible, Vivienne, because you only measure human worth by price tags and brand names,” Ella continued, her voice echoing clearly across the silent boardroom. “You thought shouting at the staff, breaking vases, and throwing wine in a working woman's face made you powerful. But while you were busy playing the tyrant, you forgot to check the digital paper trail.”

Ella pointed a slender finger at the document.

“Every time you logged into the subsidiary servers to alter the shipping schedules, your IP address routed through your personal tablet. Every time you wired funds to Sterling, your encrypted chat logs were automatically mirrored to our secure cloud storage. You didn't just leave fingerprints, Vivienne. You built a highway straight to a prison cell.”

The board directors murmured among themselves, casting looks of profound respect toward Ella. Even the senior partners—men who usually looked down on anyone without an Ivy League pedigree—now looked at the former maid as if she were a general who had just won an impossible war.

Dominic stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked around the table, stopping right beside Ella’s chair. He didn't touch her, but the proximity between them radiated an unspoken, unshakeable partnership.

“The federal marshals are waiting outside, Vivienne,” Dominic said coldly. “May you find the accommodations in federal prison as luxurious as the ones you tried to steal.”

Two marshals stepped forward, hauling Vivienne to her feet. She screamed, thrashing wildly as they dragged her out of the boardroom, her desperate cries echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy doors finally sealed shut, locking her out of the empire forever.
