Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Caldwell Mansion

The next morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the massive Caldwell Estate draped in a heavy, suffocating fog. The mansion was a colossal piece of historic architecture, surrounded by towering oak trees covered in Spanish moss that looked like weeping ghosts.

As Adrian’s sleek black SUV pulled up to the grand entrance, Lena felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather.

The front doors opened, and a woman stepped out. She was impeccably dressed in a tailored grey suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a bun so tight it seemed to pull the skin of her face taut. This was Evelyn Croft, the estate manager.

“Adrian, thank goodness you’re back,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and dripping with practiced concern. “We were frantic when you took Maya out in that dreadful storm. And who is this?” Her sharp blue eyes locked onto Lena, cold and calculating.

“This is Lena Brooks,” Adrian said, his tone perfectly controlled, though Lena could feel the rigid tension radiating from him. “She is Maya’s new companion and primary caregiver. I felt a younger, more relatable presence might help her progress.”

Evelyn’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “I see. But Adrian, Dr. Vance and I have a highly structured regimen for Maya. Introducing an unqualified... outsider could severely regress her therapeutic progress.”

“The decision is made, Evelyn,” Adrian said coldly, guiding Maya and Lena inside.

The interior of the mansion was breathtakingly beautiful, yet sterile. There were no family photographs, no toys scattered about. It felt less like a home and more like a high-end museum—or a prison.

That afternoon, Lena was shown to Maya’s room. It was a massive suite filled with expensive dolls and beautiful furniture, but it felt incredibly lonely. As Lena unpacked a few of her things, the door opened, and a tall, middle-aged man in a sharp linen suit walked in.

“Ah, the new savior,” the man said, a condescending smirk on his face. “I am Dr. Harrison Vance. Maya’s personal physician.”

Lena stood up, keeping her expression neutral. “Nice to meet you, Doctor.”

“Let’s be clear, Miss Brooks,” Vance said, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a low, intimidating hum. “Maya is a highly unstable child. She suffers from severe psychological delusions. It is imperative that you do not fill her head with fantasies or attempt to bypass my medical authority. If she exhibits any... unusual behavior, you report to me first. Understood?”

Lena saw the subtle threat in his eyes. She nodded meekly, playing the part of the naive, overwhelmed diner girl. “Of course, Doctor. I just want to help.”

Once Vance left, Lena locked the door. She turned to Maya, who was sitting quietly on the edge of her canopy bed.

“They are very scary, aren’t they?” Lena whispered.

Maya nodded slowly.

Lena sat beside her and pulled out a fresh, blank sketchbook and a box of colored pencils she had brought from home. “We can’t talk out loud, Maya. This house might have more hidden microphones. But we can draw. Will you draw with me?”

Maya looked at the pencils, her hand trembling. Slowly, she reached out and took a black pencil.
