Chapter 4 - The Language of Silence

Over the next two weeks, a quiet war of wits played out within the walls of the Caldwell Mansion. Evelyn and Dr. Vance watched Lena’s every move, but Lena was clever. She played the role of a simple, easily intimidated girl, while secretly executing a meticulous plan with Maya.

Every day, they sat in the garden or in Maya’s room, drawing. To anyone watching, it looked like simple art therapy. But to Lena, it was a unfolding deposition of a heinous crime.

Maya’s drawings were incredibly detailed. She drew a large, beautiful woman with golden hair—her mother, Helena Caldwell.

In the next drawing, her mother was in bed, looking very sick. But beside the bed stood Evelyn and Dr. Vance. Evelyn was holding a small, dark glass vial, and Dr. Vance was holding a syringe.

Lena’s breath hitched as she analyzed the drawing. She pointed to the vial. Maya took a red pencil and drew a skull and crossbones next to it. Poison.

Then, Maya drew another picture. It was Maya herself, hiding behind a heavy velvet curtain in her mother’s bedroom. Her eyes in the drawing were wide with terror. She had witnessed them injecting her mother with the lethal substance.

The final drawing was the most heartbreaking. It showed Dr. Vance kneeling in front of a crying Maya, holding a long, sharp needle up to her face. In the background, Evelyn was pointing at a figure that looked like Adrian, with a red ‘X’ drawn over his chest.

The message was crystal clear: If you ever speak, if you ever tell your father what you saw, we will kill him just like we killed your mother.

To ensure Maya’s silence, they had kept her drugged with mild sedatives under the guise of "anxiety medication," which kept her vocal cords relaxed and her mind too foggy to fight back. They had monitored her every move with the hidden bug to ensure she never found a way to whisper the truth to her father.

Lena felt a hot surge of fury. She gently took Maya into her arms, holding the little girl tight. “You are so brave, Maya,” she whispered into her hair. “You saved your daddy's life. But now, it’s my turn to save yours. I promise you, they will never hurt you again.”

Lena needed to get these drawings to Adrian. But Adrian had been increasingly isolated by Evelyn, who claimed he needed to focus on an upcoming multi-billion dollar merger to keep the company from collapsing.

Worse, Lena noticed that Evelyn’s suspicion was growing. The estate manager had started searching Lena’s room while she was out walking with Maya.

Time was running out.
