Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsWithin ten minutes, the quiet street outside the Elmwood Avenue house was transformed into a chaotic scene of flashing red and blue lights. Marked police cruisers blocked traffic at both ends of the block, and the low hum of an idling ambulance vibrated through the pavement.

Neighbors poured onto their front porches, whispering behind cupped hands, their faces a mix of shock and confusion. For years, they had seen Arthur Miller—Leo and Maya’s father—as a respectable, quiet accountant who kept to himself. To them, the house was just a private home.

Inside, paramedics were carefully wrapping thermal blankets around Leo and his little sister, Maya, carrying them out to the waiting ambulance. Both children flinched at the bright sunlight, blinking as though they were seeing the world for the very first time.

Evelyn stood in the sterile living room, watching the crime scene technicians begin documenting the locks, the blackout curtains, and the taped-off squares on the floors. That was when the front door swung open.

“What is the meaning of this?!” a sharp, authoritative voice boomed through the entryway.

Arthur Miller strode into the house, dressed in a crisp grey business suit, his briefcase clutched tightly in one hand. His face was flushed with anger, his eyes darting between the police officers and the technicians.

“Mr. Miller?” a detective stepped forward, blocking his path.

“I am Arthur Miller, and I demand to know why my home is swarming with police officers!” Arthur snapped, his voice carrying the rehearsed indignation of a man accustomed to controlling every situation. He caught sight of Evelyn standing by the hallway. “You! You’re that neighborhood cop. What did you do? What lies has my son been telling you?”

Evelyn stepped out from the hallway, her expression carved from absolute ice. She didn’t flinch under his glare.

“Your son didn't lie, Mr. Miller,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting cleanly through his anger. “We found your daughter locked in a windowless room with industrial bolts, deprived of natural light and basic human interaction.”

Arthur scoffed, crossing his arms with a chillingly calm composure. “That is a complete distortion of facts. My children have behavioral issues. They require a controlled, structured environment to prevent sensory overload. As a single father doing his best in difficult circumstances, I implemented a disciplinary framework approved by—by pediatric specialists.”

“Pediatric specialists don't lock children in soundproofed, barred rooms and starve them of human contact,” Evelyn replied, stepping closer to him. “That isn't structure, Mr. Miller. That’s imprisonment.”

“You have no idea what goes on behind closed doors!” Arthur’s mask finally slipped, his voice rising into a sharp, venomous snarl as he pointed a trembling finger at her. “You think you’re a hero? You’ve ruined everything I spent years building! Those children are my property, and you will not take them from me!”

Before Arthur could lunge forward, two uniformed officers grabbed his arms, pinning them behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him toward the door, Arthur locked eyes with Evelyn one last time. His expression wasn't one of remorse or fear; it was a cold, calculating promise of retaliation.

Evelyn watched him go, knowing instinctively that locking him up tonight was only the opening skirmish in a much larger war.
