Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Strike

Thursday morning arrived with cold rain slicking the glass skyscrapers of downtown Charlotte.
The forty-fifth floor boardroom of Sterling Logistics was wrapped in tension thick enough to cut with a blade. Twelve board members sat around a massive oval oak table. At the head sat Clara. At the opposite end sat Richard Mercer, his legal team stacked behind him like a line of hired mercenaries.
Daniel sat in the gallery seats near the back window, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his presence calm and unyielding.
"The time is 10:00 AM," Mercer declared, tapping his silver fountain pen against the table. "We are here to vote on Resolution 41-B: the immediate removal of Clara Sterling as Chief Executive Officer due to non-compliance with the domestic stability clause of the founder's charter."
"I object," Clara said, her voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "My domestic life is entirely stable. I am engaged to be married, and my daughters are thriving."
"Engaged?" Mercer sneered, tossing a thick document onto the table. "To a hotel employee you met in a café five days ago? This whole engagement is a fraud, Clara! A desperate stunt to trick this board into letting you keep control of a company you are unqualified to run!"
Mercer turned to the board members, his voice rising in dramatic triumph. "I have motioned for an immediate audit of her trust. If she cannot prove this relationship is genuine and financially sound, her shares forfeit to Mercer Holdings under the terms of the loan default!"
The board members began whispering frantically among themselves. Several looked at Clara with doubt.
At that moment, the double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Marcus, Clara’s driver, walked in, carrying a small leather briefcase. Behind him walked four little girls in matching navy coats and cream ribbons, led by eight-year-old Noah.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Mercer barked, standing up. "This is a private corporate meeting! Get those children out of here!"
"They stay," Daniel said, standing up from the gallery and walking down the center aisle.
Sophie ran forward, clutching a blue folder in her small hands, and handed it directly to Daniel. Daniel kissed her forehead, then turned to face the board.
"Members of the board," Daniel said, opening the blue folder. "Mr. Mercer claims I am a fraud hired five days ago. What he doesn't know is that as the chief facilities manager of the Grand Mercer Hotel, I have had access to his corporate communications for over six months."
Mercer’s face drained of color. "What are you talking about?"
"These are certified bank statements," Daniel said, laying copies in front of each board member. "Showing that Richard Mercer has been intentionally delaying Sterling Logistics' cargo shipments at his port facilities, artificially creating the very 'financial crisis' he used to justify his loan buyout. He engineered the debt default himself."
Clara gasped, looking at the documents. "He falsified the port logs..."
"Furthermore," Daniel continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority, "Mr. Mercer attempted to bribe a family court magistrate last month to initiate a custody investigation into Clara's daughters—hoping to force her into a marriage settlement by threatening to take her children."
A loud, horrified gasp shattered the room. Two board members immediately stood up in outrage.
"This is outrageous! Lies!" Mercer screamed, his voice cracking with panic.
"It's all here, signed by your own logistics vice president," Daniel said, stepping up to Clara's side and placing a firm, protective hand on her shoulder. "Clara Sterling didn't fail this company. You tried to rob her. And you used four innocent six-year-old girls as leverage to do it."
The lead board member, an elderly man named Arthur Vance, slammed his fist on the table. "Security! Escort Mr. Mercer out of this building immediately! We are calling an emergency session of the district attorney's office!"
Two armed security officers stepped into the room, grabbing Mercer by the arms. As Mercer was dragged out, screaming curses, the entire boardroom erupted into applause.
Clara stood up, her eyes shining with tears. She didn't look at the board members. She didn't look at the documents.
She turned directly to Daniel, threw her arms around his neck, and buried her face in his shoulder.

"Thank you," she sobbed softly. "Thank you..."
Daniel wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her tight against his chest, while Noah and the four quadruplets cheered and tackled their legs in a massive, chaotic family hug.
