Chapter 6 - A Home Built for Seven

Six months later.

The autumn air in Charlotte was crisp and golden, painted with fallen maple leaves.

In the backyard of Daniel’s craftsman home—which had recently undergone a massive renovation to add four new bedrooms—a long wooden dining table was set for a feast.

A large banner stretched across the porch read: WELCOME HOME, CARTER-STERLING FAMILY.

Noah was running across the grass, leading a game of tag with Chloe, Lily, and Maya, their laughter echoing through the trees. Near the flower garden, small Sophie was sitting on a wooden bench, holding a tiny teacup while Daniel poured warm chamomile tea from a ceramic pot.

Clara stepped out onto the porch, wearing a soft burgundy sweater, watching the scene with a smile so bright it outshone the afternoon sun.

She walked down the steps and stood beside Daniel, sliding her hand into his pocket alongside his.

"The board approved the new expansion project today," Clara murmured, leaning her head against Daniel's shoulder. "Sterling Logistics is completely debt-free."

"I know," Daniel smiled, turning to look at her. "Marcus told me when he dropped off the kids."

Clara looked at him, her hazel eyes filled with a deep, quiet wonder. "You know... six months ago, I was sitting in a café, convinced my life was over. I thought I was going to lose my company, my girls, and my sanity."

"And instead," Daniel whispered, drawing her closer by the waist, "you got a crazy house with five kids, a timber trust, and an overly protective hotel manager."

"Not just a hotel manager," Clara corrected softly, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "The man who saved us. The man my daughters call Daddy."

Daniel’s heart swelled to bursting. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Clara’s breath hitched. She stopped breathing entirely.

Daniel didn't drop to one knee; he simply stood before her as her equal, opening the box to reveal a beautiful, simple gold band inlaid with five tiny diamonds—one for Noah, and one for each of the quadruplets.

"Four six-year-olds once crawled under my table and asked me to pretend to be their father," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion, his eyes shining with tears. "I spent six months pretending, Clara. But I don't want to pretend anymore. I want to build a life with you. I want to wake up next to you every morning, protect you every day, and love you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Clara didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," she choked out, tears of pure joy spilling over her lashes as she threw her arms around his neck. "Yes, Daniel! A thousand times yes!"

Behind them, a wild chorus of cheers erupted from the lawn.

Noah and the four quadruplets came sprinting across the grass, tackling Daniel and Clara into a giant, messy pile on the autumn leaves. Sophie grabbed Daniel's lapel, her small face glowing with pure delight.

"Is it real now, Daddy?" Sophie asked, her dark eyes shining with hope. "Are you really staying forever?"

May you like

Daniel looked at Clara, then gathered all five children into his broad arms, holding them close against his heart.

"Forever, sweet pea," Daniel whispered, kissing Clara deeply under the golden autumn leaves. "Forever."
