Chapter 5 - Fire and Redemption

Three days later, the storm outside had cleared, giving way to a brilliant, sunlit afternoon.

On the tenth floor of Saint Jude’s—a private, high-security VIP wing reserved exclusively for the Vance family—the air was warm and quiet.

Lily lay in a luxurious, modern hospital bed, surrounded by dozens of fresh flowers, giant plush teddy bears, and a brand-new iPad playing her favorite cartoons. The three-hour cardiac reconstruction surgery performed by Dr. Harrison had been a resounding success. Her heart was beating with a strong, healthy, steady rhythm, and the bluish tint on her lips had been replaced by a beautiful pink glow.

Lena sat beside the bed, holding a warm cup of tea, watching her daughter sleep with a deep, boundless joy filling her chest.

The heavy door opened, and Julian walked in, wearing a simple black sweater and trousers. His wounded side was healing well under expert care, though he still moved with a quiet, dangerous grace.

He set a large wooden box on the bedside table.

“How is she?” Julian asked softly, stepping over to the bed.

“She ate a whole bowl of warm soup an hour ago,” Lena smiled, looking up at him, her eyes shining with warmth. “Dr. Harrison said she can go home next week.”

Julian looked down at Lily’s peaceful face, a rare, soft expression touching his hardened features. “She’s a fighter. Just like her mother.”

Lena set her tea down, standing up to face him. “Julian… I don’t even know how to thank you. The medical bills, the private room, the doctors… I could work three lifetimes and never pay you back.”

Julian turned to her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“You saved my life in an alley when three men were hunting me, Lena,” Julian said softly, reaching out to gently touch the edge of her hair. “You hid a bloody stranger in your cart, put yourself in front of gun barrels, and patched my wounds with your own hands. You owe me nothing. I owe you everything.”

Before Lena could answer, a loud, sharp explosion echoed from the end of the floor, followed by the rapid crack of automatic gunfire!

BOOM!

The hospital lights flickered violently.

Julian’s face instantly shifted into a mask of cold fury. He reached behind his back, sweeping a customized black pistol from his holster, stepping swiftly between the door and Lena’s chair.

The door swung open, and Marco backed into the room, firing three rapid shots down the hallway.

“Boss!” Marco yelled, bleeding from a scratch on his cheek. “It’s Victor! He tracked us to the hospital! He brought twenty men from the Brooklyn crew to finish the hit!”

Victor Vance—Julian’s treacherous cousin—had been the one who arranged the alley ambush three nights ago, desperate to seize control of the Vance syndicate.

“Keep them off this floor!” Julian commanded, his voice thunderous.

“They broke through the stairwell!” Marco yelled as return fire shattered the glass panels in the corridor outside.

Lena pulled Lily out of the bed, hugging her tightly into the corner behind a reinforced concrete pillar, her heart hammering wildly.

Two armed hitmen in tactical vests burst through the broken door frame, their weapons raised!

Julian didn’t flinch.

He moved with fluid, terrifying speed. Pop! Pop! Two precise rounds hit the first attacker in the chest, dropping him instantly. Julian ducked beneath a spray of glass, grabbed the second hitman by the throat, slammed him hard against the wall, and fired a round through his vest.

Outside in the corridor, Victor Vance stepped forward, holding an assault rifle, his face twisted in desperate rage.

“Julian!” Victor roared. “You should have died in that alley! You’re soft! You’re spending millions on a hotel maid and her half-dead kid!”

Julian stepped out into the hallway, standing completely in the open, his weapon raised, his eyes cold as ice.

“You made two mistakes, Victor,” Julian said, his deep voice carrying over the ringing alarm sirens. “You tried to steal my empire. And you brought violence into the room where my family is sleeping.”

Victor aimed his rifle, but before he could pull the trigger, Julian fired three controlled rounds in rapid succession.

The heavy rounds breached Victor’s armor. He dropped his rifle, stumbled backward against the marble wall, his eyes wide with shock, before sliding slowly down to the floor, motionless.

The remaining hitmen in the hallway dropped their weapons, throwing their hands into the air as forty more Vance security guards poured up from the elevators, completely overwhelming the attackers.

Silence returned to the VIP floor.

Julian holstered his weapon, wiped a speck of dust from his sleeve, and walked back into the room.

Lena stood behind the pillar, clutching Lily against her chest, her body shaking slightly.

Julian walked up to her, setting his hands gently on her shoulders, looking deep into her eyes for any sign of harm.

“Are you hurt?” Julian asked softly, his tone completely transformed from the terrifying killer who had just cleared the hallway.

Lena looked at him—at the bloody corridor outside, then at the gentle, fierce protection in his eyes.

“We’re safe,” Lena whispered, leaning her forehead against his chest. “Because of you.”

Julian wrapped his heavy arms around her and Lily, holding them tight against his heart, sealing his vow to protect them against the world forever.
