Chapter 6 - A Citadel of Hope

One year later.

The spring afternoon over New York was warm, filled with the scent of blooming cherry blossoms and fresh sea air.

The Vance Estate on the cliffs of Long Island was a majestic limestone mansion surrounded by fifty acres of private gardens, rolling emerald lawns, and clear blue water.

On the front lawn, six-year-old Lily was running through the grass in a bright yellow sundress, laughing delightfully as she chased a golden retriever puppy. Her heart was completely healthy, her cheeks rosy, her energy boundless.

Sitting on the sunlit stone terrace overlooking the lawn was Lena.

She wore a soft cream silk dress, her hair styled in elegant curls. Gone was the exhausted, terrified maid from the Grand Vale Hotel. In her place sat a confident, radiant woman who ran the Lily Vance Pediatric Foundation—a charity that funded free surgeries for thousands of sick children across the country.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a gentle kiss was pressed against the side of her neck.

Lena leaned back against Julian’s broad chest, a quiet, contented smile spreading across her lips.

Julian wore a tailored dark suit, his silver signet ring glistening in the sunlight. Over the past year, he had completely dismantled the violent underground elements of his family business, transforming the Vance enterprise into a legitimate global shipping, security, and philanthropic power.

“What are you thinking about, my love?” Julian asked softly, resting his chin on her head.

“I was thinking about that night in the alley,” Lena admitted, turning in his arms to face him, wrapping her hands around his lapels. “I was so scared. I thought my life was over.”

Julian looked down into her beautiful brown eyes, his fingers gently caressing her cheek.

“That night was the beginning of my life, Lena,” Julian whispered, his voice filled with a deep, reverent warmth. “You saved me from the dark. You showed me what it means to love without fear.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

He opened it to reveal a magnificent, glowing diamond ring set upon a band of polished white gold—engraved with a small, delicate soaring falcon on the inner rim.

Julian dropped to one knee on the sunny terrace, holding the ring up to her.

“Lena Lin,” Julian said, his eyes shining with absolute devotion. “You gave me a home. You gave me a daughter. Will you give me the honor of being your husband, your protector, and your partner for the rest of our lives?”

Tears of joy brimmed in Lena’s eyes.
