Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at Blackwood Creek

Before leaving the valley, Damon had one final debt to settle.
At 3:00 PM, two sleek, armored black Range Rovers pulled smoothly onto the dirt driveway of the cabin.
Eight men in tailored dark suits, carrying tactical sidearms beneath their coats, stepped out. Their leader—a massive, scar-faced man named Nikolai—rushed up the porch steps, falling to one knee before Damon with absolute, unyielding reverence.
“Don Vance!” Nikolai gasped, his eyes bright with emotional relief. “Thank God. The family thought you were dead.”
“I am very much alive, Nikolai,” Damon said, standing tall on the porch, wearing a fresh dark coat his men had brought for him. “And it’s time to remind New York who owns the night.”
Before getting into the vehicle, Damon turned to Nikolai. “Where is Silas Reed right now?”
“He’s at his main operational office in town, Boss,” Nikolai reported briskly. “The local auto-salvage yard. He’s currently calling his associates, trying to liquidate his local assets to flee the state before you hit him.”
Damon’s eyes flashed with icy fury. “Redirect the convoy. We make a stop in Blackwood Creek first.”
The Blackwood Creek Salvage Yard was a sprawling, dirty complex of crushed cars, rusted metal, and grease-stained garages on the edge of town.
Inside the main office, Silas Reed was frantically stuffing stacks of hundred-dollar bills, land deeds, and fake passports into a leather duffel bag on his desk. His two goons, Burl and Vance, were standing by the window, nervously watching the road.
“Faster, you idiots!” Silas screamed, sweat soaking through his collar. “If Damon Vance’s strike team catches us here, they’ll skin us alive! Grab the ledgers and get in the truck!”
CRASH!
The heavy iron security gates at the entrance of the salvage yard were obliterated as the lead armored Range Rover smashed through them at sixty miles an hour, sending metal tearing into the air.
The two SUVs ground to a screeching halt in the center of the yard.
Silas dropped his duffel bag, his face turning gray with absolute horror as eight heavily armed Vance operatives poured out, securing every exit in five seconds flat.
The rear door of the lead SUV opened.
Damon Vance stepped out onto the gravel.
Beside him stepped Lena, wrapped in a warm wool coat Damon had provided, holding Owen’s hand, with Scout pacing loyally at her hip. Damon had brought her along—not to involve her in violence, but to ensure she personally witnessed the complete destruction of the menace that had terrorized her life for four years.
Damon walked slowly across the gravel, stopping five paces from the office door.
“Silas!” Damon’s voice roared through the yard, echoing off the stacks of crushed steel. “Get out here!”
The office door creaked open. Silas crawled out onto his knees, his hands thrown high into the air, weeping pathetically, his nose running, his body shaking like a leaf.
“Mr. Vance! Please!” Silas shrieked, pressing his forehead directly into the dirty gravel. “I didn't know! I swear I didn't know she was yours! Take everything! Take the yard, take the money, take my cars! Just spare my life!”
Damon looked down at the whimpering man with pure, unadulterated disgust.
“You threatened a mother,” Damon said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register. “You tried to steal her land. You used a dead man’s debts to terrorize a child.”
Damon turned to Nikolai.
“Seize every asset Silas Reed owns in this state,” Damon ordered coldly. “His houses, his yards, his bank accounts. Transfer seventy percent of his total liquidated wealth directly into a irrevocable trust fund for Owen Mercer.”
Silas gasped, looking up in shock, but didn't dare object.
“And the remaining thirty percent?” Nikolai asked.
“Pay off every predatory loan Silas has issued in this county over the last ten years,” Damon commanded smoothly. “Erase every debt. Burn his ledgers.”
Lena stood by the SUV, her hands covering her mouth, tears of overwhelming shock and gratitude overflowing down her cheeks.
The weight that had crushed her chest for four long, agonizing years—the fear, the debt, the endless struggle to protect her home—was being obliterated in five seconds by the terrifying, beautiful authority of the man standing before her.
“And what about Silas and his men, Don Vance?” Nikolai asked, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his holster.
Damon looked down at Silas one last time.
“Banish them,” Damon ruled coldly. “If Silas Reed, Burl, or Vance are ever seen within the borders of this state again… bury them in the mountain.”
“Yes, Don Vance!”
Damon turned his back on the crying men, walking calmly back toward the Range Rover.
He stopped in front of Lena. He reached out, his heavy, warm fingers gently wiping the tears from her cheek.
“Your home is free, Lena,” Damon said softly, his dark eyes shining with an unmistakable, profound devotion. “Nobody will ever threaten you again.”

Lena looked up at him, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it took her breath away. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face into his chest.
Damon wrapped his heavy, powerful arms around her, holding her close, shielding her from the cold wind, the dark yard, and the world itself.
