Chapter 6 - A Sanctuary Made of Gold

One year later.
The autumn sun beamed down brightly over the rolling hills of Blackwood Creek, painting the pine forest in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and amber.
The old wooden cabin on the mountain was gone.
In its place stood a magnificent timber-and-stone estate—a grand, warm, sunlit sanctuary built directly into the mountain slope. It had floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the river, a stone fireplace, private security gates, and sprawling gardens filled with blooming autumn flowers.
On the front lawn, seven-year-old Owen was running happily through the fallen leaves, tossing a wooden stick for Scout. The massive black dog leaped through the air, catching the stick with a joyful bark, his coat sleek, healthy, and shiny in the afternoon light.
Near the porch, Lena sat on a wooden swing, holding a cup of hot apple cider.
She wore a soft cashmere sweater, her hair styled elegantly, her face radiant with health, peace, and boundless happiness. She was no longer the exhausted, terrified single mother washing clothes in the freezing river. She was a woman loved, cherished, and protected beyond measure.
The heavy oak front door opened, and Damon Vance walked out onto the porch.
He wore a dark wool suit, looking every bit the formidable, powerful kingpin who ruled the eastern underworld. Yet as his eyes landed on Lena, the cold, terrifying mask he wore for the world dissolved completely, replaced by a deep, gentle warmth reserved only for her.
He walked over, sitting beside her on the swing, wrapping a heavy arm around her shoulders and pulling her into his side.
“How was the call with New York?” Lena asked, leaning her head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
“Quiet,” Damon smiled, pressing a gentle kiss into her hair. “The families in the city are fall in line. The new shipping routes are secure. And Nikolai is managing the Manhattan offices smoothly.”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
Lena’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up at him, her dark brown eyes wide.
Damon took her hand—the hand that had once dragged him from the icy river mud—and opened the box.
Inside sat a stunning, custom-crafted platinum ring featuring a brilliant central diamond framed by two small, delicate carved silver wolves—the emblem of his family, redesigned to symbolize protection, loyalty, and eternal devotion.
“One year ago today,” Damon whispered, his deep voice thick with emotion, “a black dog found me dying in the reeds. And a brave, extraordinary woman saved my life.”
He looked deep into her eyes, his gray gaze burning with pure, unadulterated love.
“You gave me a reason to live, Lena,” Damon said softly. “You gave me a family. Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life protecting yours?”
Tears of pure joy spilled over Lena’s eyelashes, glowing like diamonds in the afternoon sun.
“Yes,” Lena choked out, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face. “Yes, Damon! A thousand times yes!”
Damon slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his lap, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their souls together forever.
