Chapter 4 - The Siege of Apartment 4B

The wood around the deadbolt splintered with a deafening crack as the heavy security door was kicked violently inward.

“Federal agents! Stay down!” I roared, drawing a standard-issue Glock 19 from my tactical shoulder holster as Evelyn instinctively dropped low behind the heavy oak dining table, pulling a concealed collapsible baton from her bag.

Three masked men in dark tactical gear surged through the doorway, their silenced submachine guns raised, sweeping the room with cold, professional efficiency. They weren't common street thugs; they were high-priced corporate fixers straight out of Vincent Romano’s private payroll.

“Clear the living room!” the lead intruder barked, advancing toward the kitchen.

I didn't hesitate. Firing two controlled shots into the drywall just above their heads to force them to take cover, I lunged behind the reinforced structural pillar near the hallway.

“You’re barking up the wrong tree, boys!” I shouted, returning fire with precise tactical discipline that immediately shattered their illusion of an easy hit.

The lead gunman ducked behind the sofa, swearing furiously into his comms. “Target is armed! We’ve got federal resistance! Reinforcements needed—!”

Before he could finish his sentence, the hallway window behind them shattered with an explosive crash.

Flashbang grenades rolled across the hardwood floor, detonating with blinding, ear-splitting concussions that filled the room with thick white smoke. Before the intruders could recover their equilibrium, front-line tactical operators from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team poured through both the front door and the shattered windows, their tactical vests gleaming under the strobe lights.

“Down on the ground! Do it now!” Marcus Vance roared, his service weapon drawn as he strode over the debris-strewn entryway.

In less than thirty seconds, all three of Romano’s fixers were zip-tied, face-down on my living room carpet.

Marcus walked over, offering me a hand up. He looked around the smoke-filled apartment, taking in the splintered door and the shattered window with a grim, satisfied smirk.

“Well,” Marcus said, dusting off his trench coat. “I see your forensic recovery skills haven't rusted away, Agent Sterling.”

“They’re a little out of practice, Marcus, but they get the job done,” I replied, holstering my sidearm and checking on Evelyn, who was dusting off her knees with absolute composure.

“The timing couldn't be better,” Marcus continued, pulling a thick stack of federal warrants from his internal pocket. “With these gunmen captured in the act of executing an illegal abduction attempt on a federal witness and a licensed trauma surgeon, Judge Vance just signed arrest warrants for Vincent Romano, Dante Romano, and every corrupt member of the hospital board.”

Evelyn looked up, a bright, fierce light shining in her eyes. “Does that mean we can finally go back to saving lives without looking over our shoulders?”

“It means,” Marcus smiled, “the entire Romano syndicate is about to find out what happens when you pick a fight with the wrong emergency room.”
