Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Illusion

The silence inside the triage bay was so profound you could hear the steady beep of the heart monitor behind my pillow.

Austin stood frozen, his mouth half-open, his eyes darting frantically between Jonathan Vance, the two imposing security guards, and me sitting in the hospital bed. Evelyn’s jaw dropped so low her string of faux pearls dangled uselessly against her chest.

"M-Madam... Chairwoman?" Austin squeaked, his voice cracking like a terrified teenager's. "Mr. Vance, there's been a mistake. This is my wife, Chloe. She doesn't work for Vanguard. She's unemployed! She's been a stay-at-home housewife for three years!"

Jonathan turned his head slowly, looking at Austin with an expression of profound disgust.

"Three years ago, Mr. Parker, the founder of Vanguard Holdings—Chloe’s late grandfather, Arthur Montgomery—passed away," Jonathan explained in a dry, razor-sharp tone. "Under his testamentary trust, Madam Chairwoman inherited sixty-two percent of voting shares in Vanguard Holdings, making her the ultimate authority over every subsidiary, including Apex Logistics."

Austin staggered back a step, his heels catching on the linoleum floor. "No... no, that's impossible! She wore old clothes! She drove a four-year-old hatchback before I bought the SUV! She spent all day at home!"

"I spent all day at home managing the Montgomery Charitable Foundation from my home office, Austin," I said calmly, sitting up in bed with Jonathan’s assistance. "And I deliberately kept my inheritance separate from our marriage because my grandfather taught me that money reveals a person's true character. I wanted to know if you loved me for who I was... or for what I could give you."

I looked at his pale, sweating face.

"For three years, I cooked, cleaned, and supported you while you built your ego. I let you put your name on the condo deed and the joint account because I believed in a partnership. But the moment you felt powerful, you treated me like a servant. And today, while I lay here bleeding, you proved you aren't even human."

"Chloe... honey... wait!" Evelyn stammered, stepping forward with her hands clasped together in a desperate, trembling gesture. "It was a misunderstanding! Austin was just stressed about the family party! You know how much he loves you! We both love you! You're family!"

"Family doesn't leave a injured woman in an ER to cook lamb, Evelyn," I replied coldly.

Jonathan pulled a thick leather binder from his briefcase and opened it in front of Austin.

"Austin Parker," Jonathan announced officially. "As of 5:00 PM today, by direct executive order of the Chairwoman, your employment at Apex Logistics is terminated for gross professional misconduct, embezzlement, and corporate fraud. All corporate credit cards, vehicle access, and regional authorization codes associated with your name have been revoked."

"You can't fire me!" Austin panicked, his voice rising into a shriek. "I have a contract! I have rights!"

"You also have a forensic audit team sitting in your office right now alongside agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Jonathan added smoothly. "The $4.8 million you embezzled through the pan-Pacific freight shell companies constitutes federal wire fraud. Federal agents are currently executing a search warrant at your secondary residence in Miami."

Austin's knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of a supply cart to keep from falling to the floor, his eyes wide with absolute, blind terror.

"And as for the joint account containing $1.2 million," I added, looking at my husband. "That account was opened using capital transferred directly from my personal trust three years ago. My legal team filed a temporary restraining order freezing those funds forty-five minutes ago. You don't own the condo, Austin. The mortgage was underwritten by a subsidiary of Vanguard. You don't own the SUV. And as of this moment, you don't even own the watch on your wrist."

Two uniform police officers entered the triage bay, accompanied by a federal agent holding a badge.

"Austin Parker?" the federal agent asked. "You're under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Hands behind your back."

As the handcuffs clicked loudly around Austin's wrists, Evelyn fell to her knees weeping hysterically, grabbing at the agent's coat. Austin looked back over his shoulder at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, weeping plea for mercy.

"Chloe! Please! Tell them it's a mistake! I'm your husband! Chloe!"

I turned my head away, looking toward the window as the sun set over the city skyline.

"Take him away," I whispered.
