Chapter 5 - The Final Clearing
Two months later. Late October 2026.
The autumn air in San Mateo was crisp and invigorating, turning the leaves on the estate's oak trees into brilliant shades of crimson and gold.
Dr. Lin had officially removed my walking boot two days prior. I walked across the emerald grass of the estate garden completely unassisted, feeling the firm, solid ground beneath my feet with every step.
Standing near the rose garden was Jonathan, holding a thick legal folder containing the final decree of absolute divorce issued by the Superior Court of California.
"It's officially over, Chloe," Jonathan said, handing me the embossed decree. "The marriage is dissolved. The condo has been liquidated and donated to your new foundation, the SUV has been returned to the fleet, and Austin Parker’s name has been permanently expunged from all Montgomery trust registries."
I held the paper in my hands, reading the final signature of the judge. There was no pain left in my heart—only an immense, liberating lightness.
"Where is he now?" I asked quietly.
"He was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc yesterday morning," Jonathan reported. "He will begin serving his twelve-year sentence immediately. Evelyn Parker has moved into a modest retirement apartment in Oregon, living entirely off her minimal social security pension."
I folded the decree neatly and looked up at the sky.
For three years, I had believed that staying humble meant staying silent. I had allowed a foolish, insecure man to diminish my worth because I was afraid of conflict. But surviving that broken leg and standing up against his cruelty had awakened something powerful inside me—a strength that would never be silenced again.

"Thank you, Jonathan," I said, putting my arm around his shoulder as we turned back toward the main house. "For everything."
"You did this yourself, Madam Chairwoman," Jonathan smiled warmly. "Your grandfather would be immensely proud of you."
