Chapter 4 - The Vulture’s Exile

While Ernesto was signing away his freedom in a sterile government office, his young wife, Ximena, was discovering just how quickly high-society loyalty evaporates when the money dries up.

She had been lounging by the pool of the Polanco penthouse, sipping a mimosa and waiting for Ernesto to call and tell her that the Coyoacán house was successfully signed over to their name. Instead, the front door of the penthouse burst open, and three men in dark suits marched onto the terrace.

"Señora Ximena Salgado?" the lead man asked, flashing a federal marshal badge.

"Yes? What is the meaning of this?" Ximena demanded, standing up and wrapping her designer silk robe tightly around herself. "Who let you in? I demand to speak to my husband!"

"Your husband is currently signing a confession downtown," the marshal replied impassively. "Furthermore, by order of the Federal Circuit Court, this residence, along with all vehicles, jewelry, and luxury assets purchased with funds embezzled from Transportes Salgado-Cárdenas, has been seized under a writ of asset forfeiture."

Ximena’s jaw dropped. "Seized? You can't do that! This diamond watch was a gift! This penthouse was bought for me!"

"It was bought with corporate funds illegally diverted from a trust protected by Mexican federal law," the marshal corrected, signaling to the other agents. "You have thirty minutes to pack two suitcases of personal clothing. All designer handbags, furs, and jewelry remain on the premises."

Panic flared in Ximena’s chest. She rushed inside the penthouse, grabbing her phone to call her friends—the wealthy older men and socialite wives she had cultivated since marrying Ernesto. She dialed her closest confidante, Sofia, whose husband owned a chain of upscale restaurants in the Roma district.

Sofia answered after four rings, her voice dripping with ice-cold detachment.

"Hello, Ximena."

"Sofia, thank God! You won't believe what’s happening—some men in suits are throwing me out of the penthouse! Ernesto is tied up with some legal nonsense, I need you to wire me fifty thousand pesos so I can stay at the St. Regis for a few days—"

"Ximena," Sofia interrupted sharply. "Let me stop you right there. My husband and I heard about Ernesto’s arrest an hour ago. The federal prosecutor’s office has already frozen every account connected to his inner circle. More importantly, everyone in Polanco knows you were just a trophy wife riding a sinking ship."

"Sofia, please! We've been friends—"

"We were never friends, Ximena. You were an expensive accessory that Ernesto bought on clearance," Sofia said bluntly, before clicking end call with a sharp click.

Ximena stared at her phone in horror as the dial tone buzzed in her ear. She tried calling three other contacts—men who had previously bought her expensive dinners and sent her designer perfumes. Every single number went straight to voicemail or was answered by assistants who claimed their bosses were "currently out of the country."

Thirty minutes later, Ximena was standing on the sidewalk of Avenida Mazarik in Polanco, holding two cheap plastic shopping bags containing a few changes of everyday clothes, watching her former life get locked behind steel doors by federal agents. The twenty-four-year-old who had laughed in Valeria’s face just hours earlier now stood in the dirt, completely destitute, realizing that a life built entirely on manipulation has no foundation when the wind blows.
