Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

The boardroom on the top floor of the Salgado-Cárdenas tower in downtown Mexico City offered a panoramic view of the sprawling capital, stretching from the colonial domes of the historic center all out to the distant, hazy peaks of the Popocatépetl volcano.

It was a crisp Monday morning, exactly two months after the morning in the Coyoacán courtyard.

Valeria Salgado—now officially Chairperson and CEO of the enterprise—stood at the head of the massive obsidian conference table. She wore a sharp, tailored charcoal-gray suit, her posture commanding and absolute. Seated around the table were twelve senior directors and regional managers, men who had once whispered behind closed doors about whether a grieving, pregnant widow could handle the pressure of a male-dominated corporate empire.

Now, every single one of them sat in rapt, respectful silence as she delivered her strategic address for the upcoming fiscal year.

"We are not merely transporting goods across national highways," Valeria said, her voice resonant, clear, and unyielding, echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom. "We are building an infrastructure of trust, transparency, and uncompromised integrity. Under my leadership, there will be no room for corruption, no backdoor deals, and no tolerance for anyone who attempts to undermine the safety of our drivers or the stability of our company."

A murmur of absolute agreement rippled through the table. Several senior directors nodded vigorously, their skepticism entirely replaced by fierce loyalty.

When the meeting concluded, the directors filed out quietly, leaving Valeria alone in the grand boardroom. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking down at the endless sea of cars crawling along Paseo de la Reforma far below.

Her phone buzzed in her jacket pocket. She pulled it out and saw a live video feed from the smart nursery monitor back at the Coyoacán estate.

On the small screen, two-month-old Camila was awake, kicking her legs happily in her crib while her nanny sang a soft lullaby. Sunlight poured through the sage-green window, illuminating the mobiles hanging above her crib—airplanes and trucks crafted from polished wood, a subtle, beautiful tribute to her father.

Valeria smiled, a deep, radiant expression that touched her eyes and erased every lingering shadow of the past.

She remembered the cold gravel of the courtyard, the sharp pain of her hair being pulled, the mocking laughter of her stepmother, and the terrifying moment her water broke while her father slammed the gate in her face. They had tried to destroy her, thinking she was weak, isolated, and defenseless. Instead, they had awakened a storm they could never escape.

Valeria slipped her phone back into her pocket, turned away from the glass, and walked with steady, confident strides toward her office. The horizon before her was vast, bright, and completely unbroken.
