Chapter 2 - The House of Ghosts

We left the city in an armored SUV. The ride was silent, but my mind was a storm. I looked out the window, watching the familiar skyline of my life disappear, replaced by the sprawling, gated estates of the wealthy elite. We arrived at a mansion that looked like a fortress carved from granite and glass.

"This is the Quillan estate," Arthur explained as we walked through the grand foyer, where art worth millions hung on the walls like mere wallpaper. "I was your father’s head of security. When he died, I promised your mother I would protect the heir until the Syndicate ceased to be a threat."

"And are they?" I asked, my voice hollow.

"They are waiting," he said, his face tightening. "They know the necklace has surfaced. The pendant you wear is not just jewelry. It contains a micro-etched encryption key for the Valerius blind trust. It is the only way to access the funds that can dismantle their operations."

I looked at the necklace, which Arthur had returned to me. It felt heavy, a weight of responsibility I had never asked for. That night, I wandered the mansion, unable to sleep. I found my mother’s old diary in a library that smelled of ancient paper and secrets. Reading her entries—the terror, the sacrifice, the love she held for me—I realized that she hadn't hidden to keep me poor. She had hidden to keep me alive.

The grief I had carried for her transformed into a burning, white-hot resolve. I wasn't the victim anymore. I was the target, but I was also the weapon.
