Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Unveiled

I set a trap. I leaked a location—a high-end auction house in the city—and let it be known that I would be there to sell more "family heirlooms." I knew Dylan would come. He couldn't resist the bait.

I arrived wearing a dress that cost more than my first car, my hair perfectly styled, my eyes cold. I stood in the VIP lounge, sipping champagne, waiting.

He found me near the back exit. He looked exactly the same, but to me, he looked like a parasite.

"Clara?" he whispered, his eyes widening. "What the hell are you doing here? I heard you were... well, I heard you were broke."

"I was," I said, turning to face him. "But then I found out what you were doing. And I found out who you work for."

His mask slipped. His expression hardened into something cruel. "You were supposed to be easy, Clara. You were supposed to just vanish. Give me the necklace, and I’ll make sure you get a head start before they come for you."

"They?" I smiled, and it wasn't a nice smile. "Arthur is right behind you, Dylan."

Dylan panicked, reaching for a weapon, but the room filled with Arthur’s men in seconds. He was disarmed, pinned to the wall, and left shaking. He wasn't the powerful man he’d pretended to be; he was just a cog in a machine that was about to break.

"You think you’ve won?" Dylan spat. "The Syndicate is coming for the estate tonight. You're all dead."
