CHAPTER 1 — THE BROTHER WHO CROSSED THE LINE

The alarm erupted through Room 347.
A sharp, relentless scream.
Every monitor suddenly flashed red.
Dr. Rebecca Lawson reacted instantly.
"Get out of the way!"
Two nurses rushed through the door.
Another doctor appeared seconds later.
Jack stepped back automatically, but his eyes never left Hannah.
The woman he had spent three months pretending to stop loving.
The woman who had been carrying his child while he convinced himself that pushing her away was the only way to keep her safe.
"Hannah!"
She didn't respond.
The monitor continued shrieking.
Ryan grabbed Jack's shoulder.
"Jack."
Nothing.
"Jack."
Still nothing.
It took a third attempt.
"JACK!"
Finally he looked away from the bed.
Ryan's face was grim.
"You need to come outside."
"No."
"Now."
The tone told him this wasn't a request.
Reluctantly, Jack followed him into the hallway.
The ICU doors closed behind them.
For several seconds neither man spoke.
Then Ryan handed him Hannah's phone.
"There's more."
Jack unlocked the damaged screen.
The messages loaded slowly.
And what he saw made his stomach drop.
Unknown Number
You should have left New York.
Last warning.
You're making this harder than it needs to be.
Another message.
Two weeks later.
The baby doesn't change anything.
Stay away from Jack Callahan.
Then another.
You're not his wife anymore.
Act like it.
Jack felt his pulse accelerating.
Because he recognized the writing style.
The phrasing.
The arrogance.
The certainty.
The sender believed they were untouchable.
Only one person in his family spoke that way.
Michael Callahan.
His younger brother.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Ryan looked at him.
"Jack."
"No."
Because there were things brothers did.
And things brothers never did.
Threatening a pregnant woman belonged firmly in the second category.
Ryan folded his arms.
"I had our people trace the number."
Jack already knew the answer.
But hearing it hurt anyway.
"It belongs to Michael."
Silence.
Cold.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Three months earlier...
The divorce had shocked everyone.
Friends.
Business partners.
Enemies.
Even Hannah.
Especially Hannah.
Because nobody knew the truth.
Not even her.
Jack had never told her about the meeting.
The one in the warehouse.
The one that changed everything.
The one where a dying man delivered a warning.
"They're coming after your family."
Jack still remembered the blood.
The smell.
The fear.
The certainty.
The man had worked for a rival organization.
And before he died, he gave Jack a list.
Names.
Addresses.
Targets.
People who could be used against him.
At the top of the list—
Hannah Walker.
His wife.
So he did what he thought was necessary.
He pushed her away.
Destroyed his own marriage.
Signed divorce papers.
Pretended not to care.
Pretended not to love her.
Pretended losing her was easier than burying her.
The problem was—
he never stopped loving her.
Not for a second.
Now she lay unconscious in a hospital bed.
Pregnant.
Malnourished.
Threatened.
Alone.
And somehow his own brother was involved.
The ICU doors opened.
Dr. Lawson stepped out.
Jack immediately moved toward her.
"How is she?"
The doctor's expression revealed nothing.
Which frightened him more than panic would have.
"We stabilized her."
Relief hit him so suddenly his knees almost gave out.
For now.
Not safe.
Not recovered.
Just alive.
For now.
"And the baby?"
The doctor looked at him carefully.
"The baby's heartbeat is strong."
Jack closed his eyes briefly.
Thank God.
But Dr. Lawson wasn't finished.
"Mr. Callahan."
Something in her tone made him look up.
"What?"
She held his gaze.
"Your ex-wife didn't end up like this overnight."
Silence.
"She has been under severe stress for months."
Jack felt guilt tightening around his throat.
The doctor continued.
"Whatever happened between the two of you—"
"It wasn't what she thought."
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Dr. Lawson studied him.
Then nodded slowly.
"I suspected as much."
Back inside the room, Hannah remained unconscious.
Machines hummed quietly around her.
Jack sat beside the bed.
Alone.
Ryan waiting outside.
The city glowing beyond the windows.
He reached carefully for Hannah's hand.
It felt colder than he remembered.
Smaller.
Fragile.
Nothing about Hannah had ever felt fragile before.
She was stubborn.
Brilliant.
Fearless.
The woman who once stood up to three corrupt union bosses and made them apologize.
The woman who argued with billionaires and won.
The woman who married him knowing exactly how dangerous his world could be.
And now—
she looked breakable.
The sight hurt more than any bullet ever had.
"Hannah."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
No response.
"I lied."
The confession hung in the quiet room.
"I never stopped loving you."
His fingers tightened around hers.
"I was trying to protect you."
A pause.
Then a bitter laugh.
"Great job, Jack."
Outside the room, Ryan's phone suddenly vibrated.
One of their security teams.
Urgent.
Ryan answered immediately.
"What is it?"
The voice on the other end sounded tense.
"Boss."
Ryan's expression darkened.
"Talk."
"We searched Michael's apartment."
Silence.
Then:
"You need to see what we found."
An hour later, Ryan entered Room 347 carrying a folder.
Jack immediately knew.
Bad news.
Very bad news.
"What?"
Ryan hesitated.
Then handed him a photograph.
Jack stared.
And felt the blood drain from his face.
Because the picture showed Michael.
Standing beside a man Jack hadn't seen in years.
A man connected to the same criminal organization that had threatened Hannah before the divorce.
The same organization he had been trying to protect her from.
The same organization responsible for multiple murders.
The same organization that should have had no connection whatsoever to Michael Callahan.
"What the hell..."
Ryan's voice was grim.
"It gets worse."
Jack looked up slowly.
"Worse?"
Ryan nodded.
"There are bank transfers."
A pause.
"Large ones."
Another pause.
"Michael's been taking money from them for nearly a year."
The room fell silent.
Because suddenly the pieces fit.
Too well.
Too perfectly.
Too horribly.
The threats.
The messages.
The pressure.
The surveillance.
The fear.
It wasn't strangers targeting Hannah.
Not entirely.
Someone close had been helping them.
Someone trusted.
Someone inside the family.
Jack looked through the hospital window.
At the city.
At the darkness.
At his reflection staring back.
And for the first time in years—
he wasn't afraid for himself.
He was afraid for Hannah.
Afraid for their baby.
Because if Michael was involved—
then this was no longer about intimidation.
It was about betrayal.
And betrayal was always the most dangerous weapon of all.
Then Hannah moved.
Just slightly.
A weak movement.
Barely noticeable.
But enough.
Jack shot to his feet.
"Hannah?"
Her eyelids fluttered.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Then opened.
For one brief second her gaze found his.
Confusion appeared first.
Then recognition.
Then fear.
Real fear.
The kind that made his heart stop.
Her lips parted.
She struggled to speak.
Jack leaned closer.
"What is it?"
A tear slid down her cheek.
And with the last of her strength, she whispered three words.
"He's coming here."
May you like
Then the heart monitor spiked again.
And somewhere in the hospital, an elevator door opened.
