CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN IN THE ELEVATOR

The words barely left Hannah’s lips.

“He’s coming here.”

Then her eyes rolled shut again.

The monitor surged.

Nurses rushed forward.

Jack stepped back automatically, but every muscle in his body locked tight.

Because Hannah wasn’t a woman who frightened easily.

If she had looked at him with that kind of terror—

someone dangerous was close.

Very close.

Outside the room, Ryan was already moving.

His hand touched the communication earpiece hidden beneath his collar.

“All units.”

His voice became cold and professional.

“Lock down the ICU floor.”

The response came immediately.

“Copy.”

“Copy.”

“Copy.”

Within seconds, security personnel loyal to Jack Callahan began positioning themselves throughout the hospital.

Elevators.

Stairwells.

Emergency exits.

Every route.

Every angle.

Every entrance.

Jack stepped into the hallway.

“What do we know?”

Ryan handed him a tablet.

“Security footage.”

The screen displayed the hospital lobby.

Patients.

Visitors.

Doctors.

Normal activity.

Then the image froze.

Jack’s stomach tightened.

A familiar face.

A man in a gray overcoat.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

Calm expression.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that usually came before violence.

Ryan zoomed in.

“His name is Victor Kane.”

Jack’s eyes narrowed.

He recognized him immediately.

Not personally.

Professionally.

Victor Kane worked as an attorney.

Officially.

Unofficially—

he cleaned up problems for powerful people.

Problems that disappeared.

Witnesses who changed their stories.

Evidence that vanished.

Enemies who suddenly became cooperative.

The kind of man who smiled while destroying lives.

“What is he doing here?”

Ryan looked grim.

“We don’t know.”

But both men knew.

Nobody like Victor Kane visited hospitals after midnight for innocent reasons.

The elevator camera changed angles.

Victor entered alone.

Pressed a button.

And smiled.

That smile bothered Jack more than anything else.

Because it wasn’t nervous.

It wasn’t uncertain.

It was confident.

Like a man arriving exactly where he expected to be.

“He knows she’s here.”

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer chilled the air.

Because Hannah had been admitted less than an hour ago.

Yet somehow—

someone already knew.

Someone had informed him.

Someone inside the hospital.

Jack’s jaw tightened.

“Find out who.”

Ryan immediately walked away.

Already issuing orders.

Already hunting.

Back inside Room 347, Hannah remained unconscious.

Dr. Lawson checked her vitals carefully.

Then looked toward Jack.

“Whatever is happening outside this room…”

Her voice lowered.

“Keep it away from my patient.”

Jack respected her instantly.

Most people became intimidated around him.

Dr. Rebecca Lawson clearly did not care.

She cared about Hannah.

And at that moment, that was enough.

“I’ll handle it.”

The doctor looked unconvinced.

But nodded.

Five minutes later—

Victor Kane stepped off the elevator.

The ICU hallway was nearly empty.

Quiet.

Sterile.

Peaceful.

At least at first glance.

Victor adjusted his tie.

Then noticed something unusual.

The nurses were watching him.

Security guards were watching him.

Even patients’ families seemed strangely alert.

A trap.

His smile faded slightly.

Then he saw Jack.

Standing at the far end of the corridor.

Waiting.

Neither man spoke initially.

The hallway became silent.

Tense.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Victor finally smiled again.

“Jack.”

Jack didn’t return the smile.

“You’re far from your office.”

Victor spread his hands.

“I came to visit a friend.”

“A pregnant woman you’ve never met?”

Victor’s eyes flickered.

Just briefly.

But Jack caught it.

The lawyer laughed softly.

“You’ve always been dramatic.”

“No.”

Jack stepped closer.

“Only when people threaten my family.”

Silence.

The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop.

Victor studied him carefully.

Then sighed.

“This is unfortunate.”

Jack’s eyes narrowed.

“What is?”

Victor’s smile disappeared completely.

“The fact that Hannah survived.”

The hallway froze.

Even the nurses nearby stopped moving.

Jack felt something dark awaken inside him.

Something old.

Something dangerous.

The version of himself Hannah had always tried to save him from.

“What did you say?”

Victor looked completely unconcerned.

“She wasn’t supposed to make it to a hospital.”

The honesty shocked everyone.

Including Jack.

Because guilty men usually lied.

Victor didn’t.

He acted like consequences didn’t apply to him.

Then suddenly—

Ryan appeared.

Fast.

Focused.

Holding a folder.

“Jack.”

His voice carried urgency.

Real urgency.

Jack glanced toward him.

“What?”

Ryan handed him several documents.

“I found the hospital leak.”

Jack opened the folder.

And froze.

Because the employee responsible wasn’t a nurse.

Wasn’t a doctor.

Wasn’t security.

It was Hannah’s obstetrician.

Dr. Nathan Fuller.

Age fifty-four.

Highly respected.

Well connected.

And according to the financial records Ryan had uncovered—

receiving large payments from shell companies linked directly to Victor Kane.

Jack slowly looked up.

“You paid her doctor.”

Victor didn’t deny it.

“No.”

A pause.

“He paid himself.”

The lawyer’s expression remained calm.

“People become remarkably flexible when enough money is involved.”

Ryan looked ready to kill someone.

Jack felt no better.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The missing prenatal care.

The medical neglect.

The pressure.

The threats.

The constant fear.

Someone had been monitoring Hannah’s pregnancy.

Watching.

Waiting.

Controlling information.

“Why?”

The question escaped before Jack could stop it.

Victor tilted his head.

“Why what?”

“Why go after Hannah?”

For the first time—

Victor hesitated.

Just slightly.

Then answered.

“Because of what she knows.”

The words hit hard.

Because Hannah wasn’t involved in Jack’s business.

Never had been.

She hated that world.

Avoided it.

Stayed far away from it.

So what could she possibly know?

Then Ryan’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

Listened.

And went pale.

Very pale.

“Jack.”

Something in his tone made everyone look at him.

“What happened?”

Ryan swallowed.

Then spoke the words that changed everything.

“We found Hannah’s storage unit.”

Silence.

“And?”

Ryan looked directly at Jack.

“There are files.”

A pause.

“Thousands of files.”

Another pause.

“Evidence.”

Jack stared.

Evidence of what?

Ryan answered before he could ask.

“Financial crimes.”

The hallway went silent.

Victor Kane stopped smiling.

For the first time all night.

That terrified Jack more than anything.

Because now he knew.

Hannah wasn’t a victim by accident.

She wasn’t collateral damage.

She wasn’t simply connected to him.

She had become dangerous.

Dangerous enough that powerful people wanted her silenced.

Dangerous enough to be threatened while pregnant.

Dangerous enough to die.

Inside Room 347—

Hannah suddenly opened her eyes again.

Weakly.

Painfully.

Her gaze searched the room.

Then found Jack.

She looked terrified.

Desperate.

Urgent.

She lifted a trembling hand toward him.

Jack rushed to her bedside.

“Hannah.”

Her lips moved.

No sound emerged initially.

Then finally—

a whisper.

“The ledger.”

Jack frowned.

“What ledger?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“The baby…”

Her breathing became uneven.

“The baby wasn’t the only secret.”

Jack felt his stomach drop.

“What are you talking about?”

Hannah’s fingers tightened weakly around his wrist.

Then she whispered six words.

“The names are in the ledger.”

Outside the room—

Victor Kane’s expression finally changed.

Because through the glass door—

he had seen Hannah wake up.

And for the first time all night—

the man who feared nothing looked afraid.

Very afraid.

Because whatever was hidden inside that ledger—

it was powerful enough to threaten men like him.

Powerful enough to expose years of corruption.

Powerful enough to bring down people who believed themselves untouchable.

And now Hannah Walker was awake.

May you like

Which meant the secret they tried to bury—

was about to come back to life.
