Chapter 1 - The Gathering StormThe Ashford family did not just enter a room; they occupied it. At 8:06 a.m., the hospital’s automatic doors parted to reveal a phalanx of three men in charcoal-gray suits, led by a man whose face was a blueprint of calculated coldness. Richard Ashford. Even without the news reports and the Forbes profiles, Caleb recognized the eyes—they were the same dead, predatory eyes he had

Caleb stood by the nursing station, his pulse drumming against his eardrums. He watched as the entourage bypassed the reception desk, their stride purposeful, cutting through the hospital’s morning chaos like a blade.

"Doctor Morgan," Richard Ashford said, stopping just inches from Caleb. His voice was a thin, cultured rasp. "I am Richard Ashford. We’ve been notified that my daughter, Vivian, is in your care."

"She’s stable, Mr. Ashford," Caleb said, keeping his hands visible. "But she’s suffering from significant retrograde amnesia. She doesn't recognize her daughter."

Richard’s expression didn't flicker—no relief, no concern, not even a blink of paternal instinct. "A side effect of the trauma, no doubt. We have our own medical transport team waiting. We will be moving her to our private facility in the city within the hour."

"She’s not ready for transport," Caleb countered, stepping into the path of the head nurse who was already holding a stack of release forms. "Her tox screen is still in process. She needs stability, not a helicopter ride."

Richard leaned in. The air between them felt ionized, charged with a threat that couldn't be quantified in a medical file. "Dr. Morgan, you have spent the last eighteen months filing reports about my company’s devices. You have been a thorn in my side. Do not make the mistake of becoming an obstacle to my family."

Caleb felt a chill settle in his marrow. This wasn't just about Vivian. This was about the silence he had tried to break, and the fact that Richard Ashford knew exactly who was trying to whistleblow.
