Chapter 4 - The AwakeningRachel looked Daniel dead in the eye.

“The bracelet isn't in my possession anymore,” she lied calmly. “It has already been logged into the hospital’s secure evidence locker for internal review.”

Daniel’s face flushed with anger. “You're making a terrible mistake.”

“No,” Rachel said, standing up to meet his height. “The mistake was thinking you could treat your stepdaughter like trash and expect her to stay silent.”

Daniel scoffed, walking away toward Room 418. Rachel immediately followed at a distance. She couldn't leave Claire alone with him.

When Rachel opened the door to Room 418, she found Claire Mercer sitting up in bed.

The heavy IV sedation had begun to wear off. Claire’s eyes were bloodshot, but her mind was clearing. She was cradling baby Noah in her arms, tears silently streaming down her face.

Daniel stood at the foot of the bed, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

“Claire, darling,” Daniel was saying softly, shifting back into his manipulative tone. “You’re confused. You’ve had a traumatic labor. The doctor gave you epidural medication that affects your sense of time.”

“I heard the church bells, Daniel,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling but clear. “The old cathedral bell across the street chimes four times every hour, and it strikes twelve at midnight. I heard the twelve chimes finish... and then I felt the final push. Noah wasn't born before midnight. He was born after.”

“Claire, stop it!” Daniel snapped, losing his cool for a second before softening his tone again. “You were out of it! Dr. Cole says it was 11:54 p.m. Why are you arguing with me? This is for our family! This is for Noah’s future!”

“What about Emma’s future?” Claire asked, her voice rising with sudden strength.

Daniel froze. “What does Emma have to do with this?”

“I heard what you said to your lawyer on the phone while I was in recovery,” Claire said, tears overflowing. “You told him that if Noah inherits the estate, you’ll set up a trust that excludes Emma because she isn't ‘Mercer blood.’ You called my daughter a charity case.”

Daniel took a step toward her. “Claire, you're delusional—”

“She’s not delusional, Mr. Mercer,” Rachel said, stepping firmly into the room and standing beside Claire’s bed. “And Emma isn't asleep anymore.”

Emma stepped out from behind Rachel, her small face pale, but her eyes fixed on her mother.

“Mommy,” Emma cried, running to the side of the bed.

Claire pulled Emma into a tight embrace with her free arm, holding both her children close. “Oh, baby. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry I let him make you feel like you didn't belong.”

Daniel’s face twisted into an expression of raw malice. “You women are ruining everything over stupid sentimentality! Do you have any idea how much money is on the line? Sixty million dollars! We could have had everything!”

“We don't want your stolen fortune, Daniel,” Claire said, looking at her husband with complete clarity for the first time in years. “Get out.”

“I am his father!” Daniel yelled, pointing at baby Noah. “I have legal rights!”

“And I am his mother,” Claire replied, her voice ringing with newfound courage. “And right now, you are going to leave this room before I call security.”

Daniel glared at Rachel, then at Claire. “This isn't over. Dr. Cole’s signature is on the official birth certificate. The legal timestamp is 11:54 p.m. There’s nothing you can do.”

He turned on his heel and slammed the door behind him.
