Chapter 5 - The Trap SpringsAt 7:00 a.m., the shift change began. The quiet night floor transformed into a bustling hub of morning doctors, daytime nurses, and administrative staff.

Rachel didn't go home when her shift ended. Instead, she walked directly to the hospital administrator’s office on the top floor, carrying a manila folder containing printed copies of the telemetry logs, the audit trail showing Dr. Cole’s modification, and the original 12:07 a.m. newborn bracelet.
She was met outside the office by Victoria Vance, the Chief Risk Officer for the hospital system, and Chief of Medicine Dr. Sarah Lin.
“Nurse Rachel,” Dr. Vance said, motioning her into the conference room. “We received an urgent notification from Dr. Cole this morning claiming you stole patient records and harassed a high-profile family during labor.”
Rachel didn't flinch. She laid the manila folder flat on the table and opened it.
“Dr. Cole is trying to cover up a felony fraud,” Rachel said calmly. “And Nurse Marcus assisted him.”
For the next twenty minutes, Rachel laid out the entire sequence of events:
The 12:07 a.m. birth timestamp recorded on the telemetry line.
The 12:32 a.m. overwrite by Dr. Cole.
The two bracelets handed to her by nine-year-old Emma.
The financial motive involving the Mercer Trust deadline at Midnight on August 2nd.
Dr. Lin examined the telemetry printouts, her expression turning gravely serious. “Telemetry audio logs cannot be edited manually without administrative root keys. This recording clearly captures the infant crying at seven minutes past midnight.”
“Dr. Cole thought he could overwrite the electronic chart and destroy the original wristband,” Rachel explained. “He didn't realize the telemetry system automatically archived to the central server.”
Dr. Vance picked up her phone immediately. “Connect me to Legal and Hospital Security. I need Dr. Adrian Cole and Nurse Marcus brought to Conference Room B immediately. And call the District Attorney’s office.”
Meanwhile, downstairs in the main lobby, Daniel Mercer was meeting with his family estate lawyers. He was preparing to file the fraudulent birth certificate with the probate court to claim the $60 million trust before his mother’s death was officially processed by the county clerk.
