Chapter 2 - The 8:00 AM ExecutionThe sun hadn't even fully cleared the horizon over the city when my phone began vibrating violently on the nightstand of my hotel suite. I had left the suburban mansion immediately after dinner, checking into an executive suite downtown with a secure fiber-optic connection and a panoramic view of the financial district.

I ignored David’s frantic calls—thirteen missed calls, followed by a string of increasingly unhinged text messages ranging from “Where the hell are you?” to “You’re destroying our marriage over a few grand?”

Instead, at exactly 8:00 AM, I answered a call from Victoria Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Forensic Law.

“Good morning, Eleanor,” Victoria’s crisp, authoritative voice came through the receiver. “I’ve reviewed the documentation packet you uploaded last night. Good grief, woman. This isn't just a messy divorce; this is an organized financial crime syndicate operating out of a country club.”

“Tell me the freeze orders went through,” I said, sipping my black coffee as I watched the morning commuter traffic crawl across the bridge below.

“As of 7:45 AM, every single joint account, family trust, and corporate ledger linked to David Ross, Richard Ross, and Lorraine Ross has been hit with emergency civil asset freezing injunctions,” Victoria replied with a hint of professional satisfaction. “Furthermore, because you included the verified proof of the fraudulent PPP loans and tax evasion, I’ve already forwarded the digital dossiers directly to the federal prosecutor’s economic crimes division and the state tax board.”

A cold, sweet thrill of vindication washed over me. “And Richard’s wealth management firm?”

“Under federal receivership as of twenty minutes ago,” Victoria stated. “The auditors walked into their offices downtown right when the doors opened. Richard’s business partner is currently having a minor medical emergency in the lobby.”

“Wonderful,” I murmured. “What about the divorce papers?”

“Served to David at his office ten minutes ago. We’re filing for immediate dissolution based on financial infidelity, domestic abuse, and malicious asset dissipation, demanding 100% of marital assets as restitution for the embezzlement and fraud.”

I hung up the phone, feeling the last physical remnants of the pain in my scalp vanish. The trap was sprung. The gate had dropped. Now came the fun part: watching the empire built on theft collapse into dust.

Back at the suburban mansion, the shockwave hit around 9:15 AM.

According to the smart-home alert logs and David’s panicked voicemail transcripts, David had tried to buy coffee on his way to work only to find his corporate credit card declined. Ten minutes later, Richard called him screaming because his business bank accounts were suddenly locked with a federal error code. And Lorraine? Lorraine had tried to access her safety deposit box at the downtown bank to retrieve her heirloom diamond tennis bracelet, only to be informed by armed bank security that the entire vault was under a federal seizure warrant.

By 10:30 AM, my burner phone rang. It wasn't David. It was Richard.

When I slid the answer button, Richard’s voice—usually booming, confident, and dripping with condescension—sounded cracked, breathless, and terrified.

“Eleanor?” Richard wheezed. “What is this? What did you do? The bank is saying... they’re saying my firm is being audited for federal fraud. Richard Jr. received a notice of asset seizure. This is a mistake. Talk to your lawyer. Fix this immediately.”

I leaned back against the plush hotel pillows, letting out a calm, measured breath.

“It’s not a mistake, Richard,” I said smoothly. “Marriage means sharing, remember? Well, you and your family are about to share a very long, very thorough federal investigation.”

“You little bitch—” Richard started to roar, but I hung up the phone and blocked his number.

The game had only just begun.
