Chapter 2 - THE EIGHT O'CLOCK KNOCKThe morning sun filtered through Stephanie’s sheer white window curtains, painting long, pale stripes across her wooden floorboards. It was 7:55 A.M. She was already dressed in a charcoal blazer and tailored trousers, her hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. She had spent the last hour reviewing her store's inventory sheets and checking the shipment tracking numbers for her organic lavender candles.

She felt entirely detached from the events of the previous night, as if the girl who had sat humiliated with soda dripping down her jeans belonged to a completely different lifetime.

At precisely 8:00 A.M., a heavy, violent pounding rattled her apartment door.

Bam. Bam. Bam.

It wasn't the polite knock of a neighbor or a delivery courier. It was the frantic, pounding rhythm of sheer panic.

Stephanie walked down the short hallway at a measured, unhurried pace. She unlocked the deadbolt, pulled the door open, and looked out.

It was Mike.

He looked like he hadn't slept a wink. His hair was sticking up in all directions, he was wearing a wrinkled hoodie over pajama pants, and his face was flushed a furious, mottled red. Behind him in the street, his brand-new, top-of-the-line black SUV—the pride and joy of his suburban neighborhood status—was sitting empty with its hazard lights blinking.

"What the hell did you do?" Mike screamed, his voice cracking as he lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the doorframe before Stephanie could close it in his face.

Stephanie didn't flinch. She simply leaned against the door, crossing her arms over her chest. "Good morning to you too, Mike. Did you forget your manners at home?"

"Don't play games with me, Stephanie!" Mike roared, spraying spittle as his face contorted with rage. "I woke up twenty minutes ago to an alert from the bank saying our construction loan has been called in! They’re demanding the full forty grand by tomorrow morning, or they’re freezing our accounts and slapping a lien on the house! And—and when I went outside to drive down to the branch, my truck wouldn't start!"

"Your truck won't start?" Stephanie raised an eyebrow, feigning mild curiosity. "Did you check the battery?"

"The bank repo truck was already hooking it up from the driveway, you psychotic witch!" Mike yelled, his voice rising high enough to echo down the communal stairwell. "They said the line of credit backing my financing was pulled! They said you did it!"

"Oh," Stephanie said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Well, technically, I didn't pull your line of credit, Mike. I simply removed my name from your financial safety net. As for your truck... well, if you finance a luxury vehicle using business credit tied to a failing construction LLC that just lost its primary guarantor, what did you honestly expect would happen?"

May you like

Mike stared at her, his jaw slackening as the terrifying reality of her words began to penetrate his panic. "You... you can't do that. Mom’s birthday was last night! We were celebrating!"

"Yes, you were," Stephanie replied softly, her eyes turning as cold as shattered ice. "You and your son made sure I had a wonderful time. And now, you get to experience what it feels like when the floor completely drops out from under you. Except unlike me, Mike, nobody is going to hand you a paper napkin."
