Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY EMERGENCY SUMMONSBefore Mike could lunge past the threshold or scream another profanity, his cell phone buzzed violently in the pocket of his hoodie. He pulled it out with trembling fingers, glanced at the screen, and answered it on speakerphone before Stephanie could shut the door.

"Mike? Michael, where are you?!" Gertrude’s voice shrieked through the tiny speaker, frantic and breathless. "Jenna just called me! The bank is calling about the house! They’re saying the construction funds have been frozen and they’re threatening foreclosure! What is happening?!"
Mike swallowed hard, his eyes locked onto Stephanie with a mixture of terror and burning hatred. "It’s Stephanie, Mom. Your golden daughter-in-law's favorite sister. She pulled her name off the loan. She just ruined everything!"
A sharp intake of breath hissed through the phone. Then Gertrude’s voice hardened, shifting instantly into the imperious, demanding tone she had used to control her children for decades. "Put her on the phone right now, Michael. Put her on speaker."
Stephanie didn't wait for Mike to hand her the phone. She leaned forward, speaking directly into the microphone with crystal-clear articulation.
"I'm right here, Gertrude."
"Stephanie! Have you lost your absolute mind?" Gertrude screamed, her voice cracking with indignation. "Your brother is trying to build a stable home for his family! For Tyler! And you pull your financial support out of sheer, petty spite just because of a silly little joke last night?"
"A silly little joke?" Stephanie repeated, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying stillness that made Mike flinch. "Your grandson poured a full cup of sugary soda onto my lap while reciting your exact words—'Grandma says you don’t belong here.' And my brother laughed. He laughed like it was a performance."
"He is a fourteen-year-old boy!" Gertrude defended fiercely, her voice shrill. "Boys horse around! You are a grown woman holding onto ancient grudges because you can't stand seeing your brother succeed where you failed! You've been bitter ever since—"
Click.
Stephanie reached out, tapped the screen of Mike’s phone, and ended the call.
Mike stared at the dark screen in utter disbelief. "You hung up on our mother? Are you insane? She’s going to disown you! She’s going to cut you out of the family completely!"
"Mike," Stephanie said, her voice smooth and steady as she reached for her door handle. "For the last nine years, I have allowed this family to treat me like a doormat because I was afraid of being alone. I was afraid of what you would say, what Gertrude would say, what the rest of your little suburban clique would whisper behind my back. Do you know what I realized when Tyler poured that soda on me yesterday?"
Mike didn't answer. He just stood there, breathing heavily.
"I realized I already was alone," Stephanie whispered. "You stopped being my family a long time ago. You were just a group of people who used my kindness to pad your lifestyle while mocking my grief. So let Gertrude disown me. Let her cut me out. Because as of right now, I am cutting all of you out first."

She swung the heavy wooden door shut in his face and engaged the deadbolt with a loud, satisfying clack.
Outside, Mike began pounding on the wood again, screaming her name, but Stephanie walked back to her kitchen, picked up her coffee mug, and watched from her window as a flatbed tow truck hauled Mike’s luxury SUV out of her sight.
