Chapter 2 - THE MORNING AFTER AT VANCE & WHITAKERThe morning sun cast long, pale shadows across the sleek, glass-paneled headquarters of Vance & Whitaker Logistics in downtown Chicago. The corporate lobby smelled of expensive espresso and polished marble, a temple of corporate success built on decades of Robert’s sweat and sacrifice.

Michael Whitaker strode through the double doors at 9:15 AM, dressed in a custom charcoal Brioni suit, a gold Rolex gleaming on his wrist. He looked every bit the young, untouchable corporate titan. Behind him walked Cassandra, wearing a white Chanel tweed jacket, her sunglasses perched stylishly on her head despite being indoors. They had just returned from picking up their first-class airline tickets for their Maldives honeymoon.

“Good morning, Mr. Whitaker,” the receptionist greeted brightly, standing up. “Your father is waiting for you in the executive boardroom.”

Michael frowned slightly, adjusting his cuffs. “My father? I thought he was taking the week off to look after my mother’s... little accident.”

“He’s inside, sir. And he requested that you bring Mrs. Whitaker in with you as well.”

Pushing open the heavy mahogany doors of the executive boardroom, Michael flashed an easy, condescending smile. He expected to find his father looking tired, perhaps offering a compromise on some minor corporate account or demanding an apology for the wedding day drama.

Instead, Robert sat at the head of the massive conference table. He wasn't alone. Seated beside him were Marcus Vance, the firm’s senior legal counsel, and two armed corporate security guards stationed quietly by the doors.

“Dad,” Michael said, his smile faltering slightly as he took in the icy atmosphere in the room. “What’s this about? Cassandra and I have a flight to catch to Zurich by noon, and our connection to the Maldives leaves—”

“Sit down, Michael,” Robert interrupted. His voice was dangerously calm, devoid of any warmth or paternal affection. It was the voice a seasoned commander used right before ordering an artillery strike.

Cassandra scoffed softly, crossing her arms. “Really, Robert? If this is about your wife falling down at our reception and making a scene, we don't have time for a guilt trip. Our wedding was featured in Chicago Social this morning, and we have a packed schedule—”

“Shut your mouth, Cassandra,” Robert said softly.

The casual venom in his tone made Cassandra recoil as if she had been physically struck. She looked at Michael, expecting her new husband to defend her honor.

Michael bristled, stepping forward. “Hey! You don't talk to my wife like that! What is wrong with you lately? First you act paranoid about Mom, and now you’re sitting here playing boardroom tyrant—”

Robert didn't blink. He reached out and slid a single sheet of paper across the polished walnut table.

Michael glanced down at it. Color drained from his face in a fraction of a second.

It was an emergency corporate audit freeze notice, stamped and signed by the firm’s chief financial officer, locking every single personal line of credit, corporate expense account, and real estate trust tied to Michael’s name.

“What... what is this?” Michael stammered, his confident facade shattering instantly. “You froze my accounts? On what grounds? I’m the co-CEO of this company!”

“You were co-CEO,” Marcus Vance corrected smoothly, adjusting his glasses. “Until an internal audit conducted at 7:00 AM this morning revealed systematic embezzlement, unauthorized personal luxury withdrawals totaling over four hundred thousand dollars, and fraudulent asset transfers into offshore accounts registered under shell corporations.”

Michael stared at the lawyer in absolute horror. “That’s insane! Those were corporate restructuring funds!”

“Those were my retirement reserves, you ungrateful parasite,” Robert finally stood up, leaning his palms flat against the table and towering over his son.

Before Michael could formulate a lie, Robert reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the black flash drive, and tossed it onto the table. It slid across the wood and stopped right against Michael’s leather shoes.

“Recognize that?” Robert asked quietly. “That’s the security footage from the Grand Azure Estate bridal corridor. The one your bride thinks was successfully deleted.”

Michael’s knees buckled slightly. He looked down at the flash drive, then up at his father, his lips parting in silent, suffocating terror.
