Chapter 3 - THE COLLAPSE OF GLASS AND STEELThe silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents high above, punctuated only by the ragged, shallow breathing of Michael Whitaker.

Cassandra, sensing the shifting tectonic plates beneath her feet, stepped forward, her face twisted in frantic denial. “That’s a lie! Some disgruntled employee probably doctored that video! We had a perfect wedding, everyone loved us, and you can’t just—”

“Shut up, Cassandra,” Michael snarled, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate panic. He looked at his father, his eyes welling with pathetic, forced tears. “Dad... Dad, please. Listen to me. Cassandra was stressed, the wedding planner messed up the seating chart, everyone was watching us... it was just a moment of frustration. We didn't mean to hurt Mom!”

“You didn't just hurt her, Michael,” Robert said, his voice dropping into a register of pure, frozen fury. “You assaulted her. In a public venue. While she was defenseless. And then you watched your trophy wife kick her shoe away like garbage.”

Robert walked slowly around the table, stopping just inches from his son. He looked down at the expensive Brioni suit, the gold watch, the polished shoes—all bought with the empire Robert had built from the ground up.

“You thought because your mother was kind, because she swallowed her pain and protected you from my temper when you were a boy, that she was weak,” Robert whispered. “You thought you could step on her, humiliate her, and walk away to your luxury honeymoon while she iced her bruised arm in the dark.”

Michael swallowed hard, his throat dry. “What... what are you going to do?”

“Everything,” Robert replied calmly. “By 1:00 PM today, the board of directors will convene an emergency vote to strip you of your title, your shares, and your office. By 3:00 PM, the residential mortgage on your penthouse apartment—which is backed by corporate equity—will be foreclosed. And by tomorrow morning, the state’s attorney will receive a complete forensic packet detailing your embezzlement of company funds.”

Cassandra let out a sharp, hysterical shriek. “You can’t do that! We’re newlyweds! We’ll be ruined! Our friends, our social circle—”

“Your social circle?” Robert turned his cold gaze toward her. “Your friends only love your bank account, Cassandra. And by sunset today, you won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee at a diner.”

Robert turned his back on them, walking toward the boardroom doors with Marcus Vance trailing closely behind.

“Have a nice life, children,” Robert muttered over his shoulder. “Or whatever is left of it.”

As the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, locking them inside the empty boardroom, Michael sank heavily into a leather chair, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his total, absolute ruin finally settled over him like a tomb.
