Chapter 3 - The Family Reunion

The tension in the kitchen could have cut glass. Lauren stood frozen against the marble counter, her chest heaving as she realized every escape route was blocked.

“Dad!” Sarah rushed across the room, throwing her arms around George’s neck and burying her face in his shoulder. “Thank God. Emily called us at four in the morning. She told us everything.”

George wrapped his arms around his daughter, closing his eyes as a profound wave of relief washed over him. He looked over Sarah’s shoulder and saw Mike standing a few feet away, his jaw tight, his eyes unscrewed by stubborn pride for the first time in years.

Mike stepped forward, extending a hand to his father. They didn't shake; they pulled each other into a firm, reconciliatory embrace.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” Mike muttered, his voice thick with emotion. “I was too proud to see what she was doing to you. I let my anger keep me away when you needed me most.”

“You’re here now, son. That’s all that matters,” George replied, clapping Mike on the back.

Lauren, realizing her facade was completely pulverized, dropped all pretense of innocence. Her face twisted into an ugly, snarling mask. She glared at Emily, who stood trembling by the pantry.

“You little rat!” Lauren shrieked, lunging forward toward Emily with her fingernails outstretched like claws. “You ruined everything! You stupid, worthless—!”

Before Lauren could take two steps, one of the state troopers intercepted her with practiced efficiency, grabbing her wrists and snapping the steel cuffs securely around them with a sharp click.

“Lauren Vargas, alias Lauren Hayes,” the trooper recited neutrally. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit financial fraud, and identity falsification. You have the right to remain silent...”

As they dragged her kicking and screaming toward the front hallway, Lauren turned her head, screaming back over her shoulder, “You think you’ve won, you old fossil! My partner is already liquidating the secondary accounts! You’ll be penniless by sundown!”

The heavy front door slammed shut, cutting off her shrill cries and plunging the grand estate back into silence.

Emily slumped against the pantry counter, bursting into quiet tears of sheer relief. George walked over to her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“You saved my life, Emily,” George said earnestly. “And you saved my family. Your mother’s operation—consider it paid in full, starting today, through the best medical foundation in the state.”

Emily wiped her eyes, looking up with a watery smile. “Thank you, Mr. George. I just... I couldn't let her hurt you.”

With the immediate threat neutralized, George turned to his children. “Now,” he said, his executive mindset snapping back into place. “Lauren mentioned a partner. Someone named Vargas working from the shadows. Let’s sit down in the study and figure out who else needs to be held accountable.”
