Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Accomplice

The study felt entirely different in the afternoon light. The heavy oak desk, once a symbol of isolation and corporate vulnerability, was now a command center of familial unity.
George sat in his leather armchair, sipping a fresh cup of tea—brewed personally by Sarah, with a sealed tea bag she had inspected herself—while Marcus Vance, the family’s longtime chief legal counsel, laid out several corporate folders across the leather blotter.
“Lauren didn't act alone,” Marcus explained, tapping his pen against a complex corporate diagram connecting Pendleton Enterprises to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. “The bank accounts Lauren accessed were funneled through a primary beneficiary named Arthur Vargas. According to our private investigators, Arthur isn't just a business associate—he’s her legal husband.”
Mike leaned over the desk, frowning at the documents. “Her husband? She’s legally married to someone else while marrying Dad?”
“Bigamy is just the tip of the iceberg,” Marcus said grimly. “Arthur Vargas is a convicted white-collar criminal with three active warrants across two states. He’s the brains behind the operation. Lauren was the bait; Arthur was the executioner.”
George’s jaw tightened. He thought back to the quiet dinners, the sweet smiles, the subtle gaslighting designed to make him believe his mind was failing. “She played her part brilliantly. I was a fool to let my loneliness blind me.”
“You weren't a fool, Dad. You were targeted by professionals,” Sarah said softly, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. “The important thing is that we caught it before it was too late.”
“Catching her is only half the battle,” Marcus noted, adjusting his glasses. “Arthur Vargas knows Lauren has been arrested. He’s going to try to drain the remaining subsidiary accounts by midnight tonight before the federal freeze order takes full effect across international wires.”
George looked up sharply. “Can we stop him?”
“Only if we bait the trap,” Marcus said with a thin, calculating smile. “We let him think Lauren succeeded in transferring the final tranche of capital. When he logs into the master portal to authorize the transfer from the Cayman account, our cyber-forensics team will trace his exact IP address and physical location in real-time.”

George leaned back in his chair, a slow, determined smile spreading across his face. For the first time in eight years, he didn't feel old. He felt alive, dangerous, and ready for a fight.
“Set the trap, Marcus,” George ordered quietly. “Let’s see how smart Mr. Vargas really is.”
