Chapter 2 - The Repossession ProtocolDaniel didn’t look at the photographers. He didn't acknowledge Celeste’s furious screeches or Marcus’s panicked sputtering. He walked straight down the center aisle, his leather-soled shoes clicking rhythmically against the polished wood floor, parting the crowd of elites as if they were ghosts.

He stopped five feet from the stage, pulled a heavy, gold-embossed document binder from his briefcase, and opened it with a crisp snap.

“Adrian Vale,” Daniel announced, his voice carrying effortlessly through the ballroom’s acoustic sound system. “Pursuant to Section 9 of the master collateral agreement binding Vale Meridian Group and its subsidiary assets to Ashcroft Holdings, you are hereby notified of an immediate termination of your employment, revocation of all executive authorities, and execution of default remedies due to corporate misconduct, fiduciary breach, and unauthorized asset diversion.”

The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated chaos.

Reporters shoved past security barriers, their camera flashes exploding in rapid succession, capturing every bead of sweat on Adrian’s pale, trembling face.

“You can’t do this!” Adrian screamed, lunging forward off the stage, completely forgetting his aristocratic composure. He grabbed the lapel of Daniel’s suit jacket, his voice cracking into a desperate shriek. “I am the CEO! I negotiated the municipal contracts! The board would never vote to oust me without sixty days notice!”

Daniel calmly reached up, peeled Adrian’s fingers away from his jacket as if removing an annoying insect, and straightened his tie.

“The board didn't vote, Mr. Vale,” Daniel replied, his voice dripping with icy professionalism. “The majority shareholder executed a written consent resolution at exactly 8:14 PM tonight. Your corporate access card has been deactivated. Your office has been locked by automated security protocols. Furthermore...”

Daniel turned a page in his binder.

“...Ashcroft Holdings is exercising its right to immediate repossession of all corporate-leased assets currently assigned to you or members of your immediate family.”

Celeste shrieked, clutching her diamond necklace as if someone were trying to rip it from her throat. “Our assets? What are you talking about? This is a public gala! You can’t touch our property!”

“Actually, Mrs. Vale,” Daniel said, turning his cold gaze toward the matriarch, “the mansion in Lincoln Park, the private jet stationed at O’Hare, the corporate accounts funding your charity galas, and the three silver Bentleys parked outside in the VIP valet lane are all wholly owned subsidiaries of Ashcroft Holdings.”

As if on cue, the ballroom’s side doors opened again. Two estate security guards walked in, carrying a small, silver tray containing three heavy metal key fobs and a stack of corporate parking passes.

Marcus jumped up from his table, his face purple with rage. “You’re insane! That’s our car! I drove that Bentley here tonight!”

“Not anymore you didn't, Mr. Vale,” a calm voice announced from the entrance.

The head valet manager, looking profoundly uncomfortable, stepped into the room holding a ring of master keys. He walked straight over to Marcus and held his hand out.

“Sir,” the manager said nervously, “the Ashcroft legal team has updated the electronic registry. The vehicle ignitions have been remotely disabled via satellite. I’m going to need the keys to the silver Bentley, and... well, the security team is already towing the Mercedes from the front drive.”

Vanessa burst into tears, her mascara running down her cheeks as she clutched Adrian’s arm. “Adrian! Do something! Make them stop! Everyone is watching us! We look like fools!”

Adrian stood paralyzed on the stage, the man who ten minutes ago had toasted his own brilliance now looking like a beggar standing in the ruins of a kingdom he never truly owned. He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes meeting mine across the empty space between us.

There was no arrogance left in his expression. Only a terrifying, hollow realization.

“Eleanor,” Adrian whispered, taking a stumbling step toward the edge of the stage, his voice breaking into a pathetic plea. “Eleanor, please. Let’s... let’s not do this here. Let’s go home and talk about this like adults. We can work this out. You’re my wife.”

I picked up my small satin clutch from the table, smoothed down the front of my dress, and looked up at him with absolute, unbothered detachment.

“We aren't going home, Adrian,” I said quietly. “Because that’s my house, too. And you’re locked out.”
