Chapter 3 - The Morning After the EmpireThe sunrise over Lake Michigan was breathtaking, casting a brilliant wash of gold and amber across the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse apartment in the Gold Coast.

It wasn't the Lincoln Park mansion—that sprawling, ostentatious monument to Adrian’s ego had been officially vacated by court order at 3:00 AM, with Celeste and Marcus forced to pack their designer luggage into the back of an ordinary Uber while process servers cataloged every piece of art, jewelry, and antique furniture purchased with corporate credit lines.

I sat at the marble kitchen island, sipping a cup of dark roast coffee while scrolling through my tablet.

The business news networks were having a field day.

“VALE MERIDIAN SHOCKER: CEO ADRIAN VALE OUSTED IN HOSTILE TAKEOVER BY MYSTERIOUS MAJORITY STAKEHOLDER.”

“FALL OF A DYNASTY: ASHCROFT HOLDINGS ASSUMES DIRECT CONTROL OF DOWNTOWN REAL ESTATE PORTFOLIO.”

The phone beside my coffee cup buzzed incessantly. It had been ringing off the hook since 5:00 AM. Board members who had ignored my polite emails for years were suddenly sending desperate voice notes begging for meetings. Creditors, suppliers, and political donors were scrambling to figure out who was actually running the show.

I tapped the screen, answering a call from Daniel.

“Good morning, Eleanor,” Daniel’s voice came through crisp and clear. “I trust you slept well?”

“Better than the Vales, I imagine,” I replied, taking a sip of coffee. “What’s the status at the corporate headquarters this morning?”

“Absolute pandemonium,” Daniel chuckled softly. “Adrian tried to force his way past security at the 50th-floor executive lobby thirty minutes ago. He threatened to call the police, unaware that our corporate counsel had already filed a formal trespassing notice. He’s currently sitting on the sidewalk outside with his briefcase, screaming into his phone trying to reach his divorce lawyers.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“She packed her bags and checked out of the Four Seasons—where Adrian had been secretly billing her suite to the company’s promotional budget—the moment her corporate credit card declined at breakfast. She’s currently unreachable.”

I smiled faintly. “Predictable. What about the restructuring?”

“The emergency board meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM. We’ve already drafted the interim CEO appointment. The institutional investors are thrilled; they’ve suspected Adrian of embezzling funds for speculative real estate ventures for over a year, but they didn't have the voting block to oust him until you stepped in.”

“Make sure the forensic audit of his expense accounts goes straight to the U.S. Attorney’s office by noon,” I instructed calmly. “If he crossed the line into illegal asset diversion, I want a paper trail so thick a federal judge couldn't ignore it.”

“Consider it done,” Daniel said. “Will you be attending the board meeting in person?”

“I’ll be there at ten sharp,” I said. “Tell the receptionist to reserve the corner office. The one with the view of the lake.”
