Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of CarterThe heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the Grand Plaza Ballroom burst open with a loud, metallic crash.

A squad of twelve federal agents wearing dark tactical vests with bold yellow FBI lettering flooded into the room, led by a tall, sharp-eyed man in a charcoal suit. Behind them came four uniformed officers from the state police, their sidearms holstered but their hands resting visibly on their belts.
"Federal agents! Stay in your seats! Nobody leave the main hall!" the lead agent commanded through a bullhorn.
The four hundred high-society guests—politicians, hedge fund managers, celebrity influencers, and old-money matriarchs—scrambled against each other like trapped animals. Wine glasses shattered, flower arrangements were overturned, and silk trains were trampled as people tried to distance themselves from the Carter family.
Agent Marcus Sterling marched straight down the center aisle, his polished black boots stepping over discarded programs and spilled champagne. He stopped at the base of the altar steps, pulled a folded piece of parchment from his inner jacket pocket, and looked up at Ethan, who was still kneeling on the carpet in his ruined dignity.
"Ethan Vance Carter," Agent Sterling declared, his voice echoing over the hushed crowd. "I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. You are charged with federal money laundering, corporate fraud, illegal weapons trafficking, and domestic battery."
"This is a mistake!" Eleanor Carter screamed, rushing forward to throw herself in front of her son. She tried to block Agent Sterling with her diamond-encrusted hands. "Do you know who my husband was?! Do you know who our attorneys are?! Sterling, I will have your badge by midnight!"
Agent Sterling didn't even blink. He gestured casually to two female agents behind him. "Remove Mrs. Carter from the perimeter if she interferes with a federal arrest. Charge her with obstruction if she takes another step."
The female agents promptly grabbed Eleanor’s arms, pulling the sobbing, screaming matriarch back into the front row.
Ethan slowly pushed himself up from the floor. The arrogance that had sustained him for thirty years had completely withered, leaving behind a pale, sweating shell of a man. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying, venomous hatred.
"You did this," Ethan spat, his voice trembling with rage. "You set me up. You spent the last year pretending to love me while you were feeding my family’s internal files to the federal government!"
"You did this to yourself, Ethan," I replied, standing tall beside my father, who had wrapped his suit jacket around my bare shoulders to cover my exposed bruises. "You thought because you owned the local police chief, nobody could touch you. But you forgot that Carter Global Logistics crosses state lines. The local authorities couldn't save you from the FBI."
Two agents stepped up the altar stairs, kicked Ethan’s feet apart, and slammed him face-down onto the velvet-covered kneeling bench where we were supposed to have exchanged our holy vows five minutes ago.
The metallic clack-clack of handcuffs echoed loudly through the silent room.
As they hauled Ethan to his feet, Agent Sterling turned to Julian Vance—Ethan’s best man—who was inching backward toward the emergency exit doors near the organ pipes.
"Mr. Vance!" Agent Sterling called out sharply. "Don't bother running to your car. Your father’s law firm is currently being searched by twenty federal marshals. We have your communications logged from the Stamford urgent care center where you attempted to bribe a physician to destroy Emily Brooks’s X-rays."
Julian’s face turned gray. He dropped his groomsman bouquet onto the floor, pulled off his boutonnieres, and held his hands out willingly as another agent stepped forward to cuff him.
Ethan was led down the aisle in chains, flanked by federal agents. As he passed the media riser, dozens of flashbulbs exploded in his face, capturing his moment of absolute disgrace for every major news outlet in the country. Before he reached the double doors, he turned his head back toward the altar, his teeth bared in a feral snarl.
"This isn't over, Emily!" he roared over the noise of the crowd. "My family has a hundred million dollars in liquid reserves! I’ll be out on bail before the sun comes up! And when I get out, you and your father will have nowhere to hide!"
"He's wrong, Miss Brooks," Agent Sterling said quietly, stepping up to the altar beside me as the crowd began to be evacuated by federal officers. He offered me a clean white handkerchief to wipe the smeared makeup from under my eyes. "His liquid reserves were frozen by a federal judge an hour ago. He isn't getting bail. Not for what we found in his secondary servers."

I looked down at the gold wedding band Ethan had tried to put on my finger minutes earlier. I picked it up off the velvet cushion, walked to the edge of the stage, and tossed it into the broken glass and spilled wine on the floor below.
"Take him away, Agent," I said softly. "I have a life to rebuild."
