Chapter 5 - The Grand Jury and the Final TrapThe federal courthouse on Foley Square was surrounded by hundreds of journalists, news vans with satellite dishes, and crowds of citizens holding signs that read JUSTICE FOR EMILY and END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Inside Courtroom 402, the atmosphere was freezing.
Ethan Carter sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained together by heavy iron shackles. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and his once-arrogant posture was completely shattered. Beside him sat three of the country's top criminal defense attorneys, looking increasingly defeated as they sorted through mountains of federal evidence.
In the gallery sat Eleanor Carter, stripped of her social standing, her face covered by large sunglasses as she tried to avoid the icy stares of her former society friends.
I sat on the witness stand, wearing a simple navy blue suit, my hair pulled back neatly, looking directly into the eyes of the twelve grand jury members seated across from me.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Victoria Chen stood at the podium, holding up the black binder recovered from the Manhattan Trust vault.
"Miss Brooks," Attorney Chen asked softly. "Can you identify the documents contained in Exhibit 42?"
"Yes," I answered clearly, my voice projecting across the silent courtroom. "Those are the original forged loan documents Ethan Carter used to bankrupt my father’s business, along with the digital access keys to his father’s offshore accounts in Panama."
Ethan’s lead attorney stood up hastily. "Objection, Your Honor! My client had no knowledge of his father’s activities in Panama! He was an unwitting participant in his father’s corporate structure!"
"Overruled, Counsel," Judge Callahan snapped, his face stern. The judge had seen the video of the vault attack from the previous afternoon, and any sympathy he once held for the Carter family had vanished entirely. "The witness will continue."
"Ethan told me repeatedly," I continued, looking directly at Ethan at the defense table, "that if I ever tried to leave him, he would ensure my father was sent to prison for financial fraud using these forged documents. He used fear, physical violence, and financial destruction to keep me silent."
Ethan suddenly slammed his handcuffed fists against the wooden table, the heavy iron chains rattling loudly. "She’s lying! She wanted my money! She begged me to marry her!"
"Sit down, Mr. Carter!" Judge Callahan roared, banging his gavel down three times. "One more outburst and I will have you removed from this courtroom and tried in absentia!"
Ethan’s lead attorney pulled his client back down into his chair, whispering furiously into his ear.
Attorney Chen turned to the judge. "Your Honor, in light of the new evidence recovered from the bank vault—including direct financial communications between Ethan Carter and his father, Arthur Carter, as well as the armed attack on federal agents yesterday—the government moves to add charges of attempted murder, treason, and corporate terrorism to the indictment."
Judge Callahan looked down at Ethan, his expression filled with absolute disgust.
"The evidence presented by the United States government is overwhelming," Judge Callahan declared. "Bail is officially denied. Ethan Vance Carter will remain in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial."
A collective murmur of relief swept through the courtroom gallery.
Ethan bowed his head, his shoulders slumping completely as two federal marshals stepped up to drag him away toward the holding cell holding doors. As he was pulled past the witness stand, he looked up at me one last time—not with anger, but with a hollow, desperate realization that his life of privilege and impunity was over forever.

He was going away for decades. His family name was ruined, his fortune was seized, and his power was shattered.
I didn't smile. I didn't cheer. I simply watched him walk away into the darkness of the holding corridor, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight that had rested on my shoulders for two years finally lift into thin air.
