Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, locking Vanessa away in the estate’s secure lower holding cells while Viktor mobilized our loyal capos across the city. The tension in the master bedroom shifted from suffocating suspense to a heavy, sobering reality.

Dr. Harris hastily packed his diagnostic equipment into his leather bag, his hands still slightly shaking. "Mr. Vance... the toxin has built up significantly in your system. Even with Vanessa removed from the equation, we need to begin emergency chelation therapy immediately. If we don't flush the heavy metals from your bloodstream within the next forty-eight hours, the neurological damage could become permanent."

"Do it, Doctor," I said, sinking back into the edge of the mattress, suddenly feeling the full weight of the physical exhaustion I had ignored during the confrontation. "Set up whatever IV lines you need. But stay inside the mansion. I don't trust anyone outside these walls right now."

Dr. Harris nodded grimly and hurried out to prepare the medical kit in the adjoining suite.

That left only Elena and me.

She stood near the doorway where she had dropped her cleaning towels earlier, her hands clasped tightly together in front of her simple uniform dress. The fiery defiance she had shown while confronting Vanessa had ebbed away, replaced by the nervous vulnerability of a mother who had just walked into a lion's den and realized the lion knew her name.

"You should go down to the servants' quarters, Elena," I said softly, massaging my temples where a dull, throbbing headache was beginning to fade. "It's late. And things are about to get very loud around here."

Elena didn't move. She took a slow breath, her dark eyes scanning the opulent, hospital-like bedroom with its expensive art, broken medical monitors, and lingering scent of antiseptic.

"Mia is asleep," Elena said quietly. "She thinks this is just another rich house. She doesn't know who you are, Dante. She doesn't know about the syndicate, or the docks, or the men with guns outside."

"Good," I replied. "Keep it that way. This world... it's a graveyard wrapped in velvet. Your mother was right to keep you away from it all those years ago."

"My mother didn't keep me away from it because of the violence," Elena said, her voice sharpening with a sudden, unexpected edge. She took two steps toward the bed, looking down at me with a gaze that mirrored my own stubborn intensity. "She kept me away because she knew what ambition does to men like you. You climb to the top of the mountain, you conquer every enemy in sight, and then you sit alone in a golden cage, wondering why everyone around you is holding a knife."

The words hit me harder than any bullet or physical blow ever had. I looked up at her—at the woman I had briefly loved a lifetime ago, whose existence I had completely forgotten while building an empire of blood and concrete.

"You're right," I murmured, leaning my head back against the pillows. "I spent twelve years building walls so high nobody could ever touch me. And the first person I let inside the fortress almost poisoned me to death."

"Not everyone who gets close is an enemy, Dante," Elena said softly. She reached down, picked up the scattered towels from the Persian rug, and neatly folded them, placing them on the corner of the desk. "Some people just want to make sure you survive long enough to see what you've built."

Before I could answer, the secure intercom on my desk chimed sharply. Viktor’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and tense.

"Boss, we have a problem," Viktor reported. "I had my men sweep Vanessa’s private study downstairs. We found her encrypted laptop and a burner phone. She wasn't just working alone. She was communicating with Marcus Kane."

My blood ran cold. Marcus Kane. The head of the rival South Side syndicate and my most bitter, unforgiving competitor in the multi-million-dollar shipping logistics wars.

"Kane?" I growled, leaning forward over the desk. "Are you certain?"

"100 percent," Viktor replied. "The messages show she was feeding him our port security schedules, warehouse inventory data, and financial audits. Kane didn't just want you dead—he wanted to legally acquire your entire corporate empire through a hostile buyout once Vanessa inherited your estate under your current will."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. Vanessa wasn't just a bitter fiancée acting out of personal spite. She was a corporate Trojan horse planted by my greatest enemy to dismantle my empire from the inside out.

"Get our senior capos on a secure conference line," I commanded, the cold, lethal authority returning to my voice with a vengeance. "If Kane thinks he can step into my vacuum while I'm recovering from his poison, he's about to learn why they still call me Chicago's most feared boss."
