Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Kane

The private VIP lounge at the top of the Chicago Board of Trade building was bathed in soft, amber mood lighting, offering a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline spread out beneath the dark velvet night.

Vanessa Vale sat at a corner leather booth, elegantly crossing her legs as she sipped a glass of vintage champagne. She wore a stunning emerald-green silk evening gown that sparkled under the recessed lights, looking every bit the triumphant queen waiting to claim her throne.

The private elevator chime pinged softly.

Vanessa didn't even look up from her phone, assuming it was Marcus Kane’s chief accountant arriving with the final transfer documents. "You're late, Mr. Sterling," she said smoothly, not bothering to raise her voice. "And make sure the offshore account numbers match the encrypted dossier I sent you yesterday. Dante’s accountants are thorough, even if he's currently rotting in his bed."

"Dante’s accountants are currently freezing your corporate assets across four continents, Vanessa," a deep, resonant voice echoed across the quiet lounge.

Vanessa froze. Her champagne glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Slowly, she turned her head toward the private entrance.

I stepped out from the shadows of the elevator foyer, flanked by Viktor and two federal marshals in full tactical gear. I wore a sharp, custom-tailored dark grey suit, my hair neatly brushed, color fully restored to my cheeks. I didn't look like a dying man. I looked like a predator returning to reclaim his throne.

For three seconds, Vanessa’s immaculate composure completely dissolved. Her jaw went slack, and the color drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and terrified.

"D-Dante?" she stammered, her voice pitching upward in panic. "How... you were supposed to be—"

"Dying?" I finished for her, walking slowly across the plush carpeting until I stood right beside her booth. "Dr. Harris adjusted my IV. Turns out, once you remove the thallium from a man's diet, his body remembers how to fight back."

Vanessa scrambled backward against the leather cushions, her eyes darting frantically toward the doors. "This is a setup! Marcus will destroy you! He has your entire dock network surrounded—"

"Marcus Kane is currently having a very uncomfortable conversation with the FBI and three federal racketeering squads at his riverfront warehouse," I interrupted smoothly, pulling out a thick manila folder and tossing it onto the table in front of her. "Along with your burner phone, your encrypted text logs, and a full confession from your Swiss financial advisor. You didn't just inherit an empire, Vanessa. You inherited a life sentence."

Before she could scream, federal marshals stepped forward, reading her rights as they slapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. As they hauled her kicking and screaming toward the private elevator, her frantic curses echoed off the mahogany walls until the doors slid shut, sealing her fate forever.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the city lights of Chicago. The wind howled softly against the reinforced glass, but inside, the air was warm, clear, and entirely my own.

The trap was sprung. The traitors were purged. The empire was secure.

And for the first time in thirty-two years, I wasn't just ruling the underworld—I was finally ready to live above ground.
