Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the FoundationThree weeks after the incident at La Bernardine Palace, the restaurant landscape of Manhattan had undergone a seismic shift. La Bernardine Palace had new management, new labor policies, and a zero-tolerance clause for harassment inscribed into every employee contract.

Anna Martinez no longer carried heavy trays of glassware across slippery marble floors.

Instead, she sat behind a polished mahogany desk on the forty-second floor of the DeLuca Tower, reviewing architectural blueprints and community outreach programs for the newly established Moretti-DeLuca Foundation—an organization dedicated to providing tuition-free education, legal aid, and medical support for working-class families and single parents in the city.

The office was vast, sunlit, and smelled of fresh orchids and aged leather.

A soft knock echoed at the glass door. Victor stepped inside, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on her desk without a word, taking a seat in the leather guest chair opposite her.

“How are the scholarship allocations looking for the Bronx district?” Victor asked, glancing at the papers scattered across her desk.

“We’ve approved over two hundred applicants this week alone,” Anna smiled, looking up with bright, confident eyes. “And the medical grant for my brother’s physical therapy has been fully processed. The doctors say he’ll be walking unassisted by summer.”

Victor nodded, a rare, genuine warmth softening his features. “Good. You earned every bit of it, Anna. You kept your dignity in a room full of wolves. That’s something money can’t buy.”

“I couldn't have survived that room without you stepping out of the shadows, Victor,” she replied softly, leaning back in her executive chair.

“I didn't step out of the shadows for you, Anna,” Victor corrected quietly, locking eyes with her. “I stepped out because it was time to let the city know that the rules were changing.”

As the afternoon sun cast long, golden stripes across the skyline of New York, Anna realized that the girl who had once lain crying on a cold marble floor was gone forever. She wasn't a nobody anymore. And standing beside Victor DeLuca, she knew she would never have to bow to anyone again.
