Chapter 3 - The Trap at the CathedralThe morning sun broke through the clouds over Chicago nineteen days later, illuminating the towering spires of St. Holy Name Cathedral in brilliant shades of gold and ivory.

The street outside was lined with black limousines, news crews, and fifty uniformed Chicago police officers providing security for the wedding of the century. Over four hundred high-society guests—politicians, judges, business tycoons, and crime lords from three states—packed the velvet-draped pews inside.

Up in the private choir loft overlooking the grand altar, Victor Moretti sat in the dark, wearing an expensive black tuxedo, adjusting a pair of high-powered brass binoculars. Beside him stood two armed bodyguards equipped with suppressed automatic weapons hidden beneath their coats.

Moretti stared down at the altar through the glass lenses, a disgusting, victorious grin spread across his face.

“Look at him,” Moretti sneered softly, watching Luca Valenti standing near the altar in a flawless black tuxedo, looking handsome, calm, and composed. “The arrogant bastard thinks he won because he got the Marcelli kid back. He has no idea.”

“Are the explosives in place, Boss?” his lieutenant whispered.

“Underneath the flower arrangements at the altar,” Moretti chuckled darkly. “The moment they exchange their vows and the priest says 'amen', we blow the stage. The Valenti family leadership dies in front of every camera in Chicago, and I take the entire Midwest by sunset.”

Down at the rear doors of the cathedral, the grand organ began to play Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, its thunderous notes filling the vast vaulted ceilings.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

A collective gasp swept through the four hundred guests.

Walking down the long red-carpeted aisle, holding her younger brother Leo’s arm, was Elena Marcelli.

She was breathtaking. Her wedding dress was a masterpiece of hand-stitched lace and silk, trailing eight feet behind her, a sheer lace veil covering her radiant face. Beneath the veil, her hazel eyes were bright, clear, and fixed entirely on the man waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

Leo, wearing a sharp tuxedo with only faint scars remaining on his jawline, walked his sister with proud, sturdy steps, guiding her toward the altar.

As Elena reached the steps, Luca stepped down to meet her. He took her delicate hand in his, bowing his head slightly to kiss her knuckles.

“You look beautiful, mia sposa,” Luca whispered softly.

“And you look ready for a fight, my Don,” Elena replied under her breath, a brilliant, fearless smile gracing her lips.

They turned toward the elderly Archbishop standing behind the altar rail.

Up in the choir loft, Victor Moretti reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, heavy silver detonator switch with a flip-up red safety cap.

“Time to die, Luca,” Moretti whispered, thumbing the red cover open and pressing down hard on the black button.

Nothing happened.

Moretti frowned, pressing the button three times in rapid succession. “What the hell?”

Suddenly, the dark curtains of the choir loft behind him were pulled back with a loud, metallic screech.

Standing in the doorway, backed by six heavily armed Valenti enforcers and two federal agents holding arrest warrants, was Marco.

“Looking for this, Moretti?” Marco asked smoothly, tossing a bundle of disarmed blasting caps and wire cutouts onto the carpeted floor.

Moretti gasped, reaching frantically for his shoulder holster, but Marco’s enforcers moved like lightning.

Within two seconds, Moretti was slammed face-first against the stone railing of the choir loft, his arms twisted behind his back, cold steel handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists.

Down at the altar, Luca didn't even look up toward the choir loft. He kept his dark eyes locked on Elena’s face as the Archbishop raised his hands over their joined palms.

“By the authority vested in me,” the Archbishop pronounced, his voice echoing through the magnificent cathedral, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”

Luca lifted Elena’s sheer veil, cupping her cheeks in his hands, and pressed his lips against hers in a long, deep, passionate kiss that made the entire cathedral erupt into thunderous applause.

As they turned around to face their guests as husband and wife, Luca leaned down close to Elena’s ear.

“Victor Moretti was just taken into federal custody, Mrs. Valenti,” Luca whispered warmly. “His empire is being seized as we speak.”

Elena looked up at her husband, tears of pure, unadulterated joy shining in her eyes, her hand squeezing his with absolute, unshakeable love.

“Then let’s go celebrate our wedding, Mr. Valenti,” Elena laughed softly.
