Chapter 2 - The Scent of Blood in the Water

The penthouse suite on the forty-second floor of the Cascade Crown was wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, offering an unobstructed, panoramic view of Elliott Bay and the glittering needles of the Seattle skyline. Outside, a gentle Pacific Northwest drizzle streaked the windows, blurring the city lights into smears of amber and neon red.

Inside, the only sound was the low, crackling flame of the gas fireplace.

Claire stood by the window, a cup of chamomile tea cradled between her palms. She had washed away the light dusting of gala makeup, changed into an oversized cashmere sweater and soft wool trousers, but the faint red mark across her shoulder still stung where Madison’s ring had caught the flesh.

Behind her, the door to the dressing room clicked open. Nathaniel stepped into the living area, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, drying his damp dark hair with a hand towel. He tossed the towel onto a leather armchair and walked straight toward her, stopping just an inch behind her back.

He didn't speak. He simply reached out and rested his chin against the crown of her head, his arms circling her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

Claire let out a long, ragged exhale she hadn't realized she was holding, leaning back into his solid, immovable warmth. "You're angry."

"I am remarkably restrained," Nathaniel murmured into her hair. "The fact that Lucas Everhart is still walking without a broken jaw is proof of my profound spiritual evolution."

Claire turned in his embrace, a faint, teasing smile touching the corners of her mouth as she looked up into his angular, sharp-featured face. "He’s your cousin, Nate. Blood."

"He’s a parasitic fraud who spent three years attempting to short our European logistics stock while skimming charity donations from an orphanage foundation," Nathaniel countered, his thumb gently trailing across the bruised skin of her shoulder. His expression darkened instantly. "She marked you, Claire."

"It's a scratch," she said softly. "The dress was what hurt. You had it made for our anniversary in Milan."

"I'll buy the atelier," he answered without hesitation. "They can make forty more."

"That isn't the point, and you know it." Claire sighed, resting her cheek against his chest, listening to the calm, steady rhythm of his heart. "Madison did what women like her always do when they feel threatened by someone they perceive as lower than them. She used violence because she lacked substance. But Lucas... Lucas knew the walls were closing in."

A sharp knock sounded at the suite’s mahogany double doors.

"Enter," Nathaniel commanded, not moving an inch away from his wife.

Marcus stepped inside, carrying a thick black leather portfolio and two encrypted tablets. He gave a respectful nod to Claire before stopping three paces from the sofa.

"The fallout has begun," Marcus reported, his voice crisp and analytical. "Grant Vale’s private jet departed Sun Valley twenty minutes ago. He’s en route to Seattle-Tacoma International as we speak. He has attempted to reach your personal cell nine times, Mr. Everhart, and has left four voicemails with the corporate office in Manhattan."

"Let him sweat at thirty thousand feet," Nathaniel replied cold-bloodedly. "What did the federal monitor say about the drive Claire secured?"

Claire stepped out of Nathaniel’s arms and took one of the tablets from Marcus, swiping through the rows of financial statements. "The shell companies are registered in the Cook Islands under the names of three former board members of the Harbor Light Foundation. Lucas was using the foundation's charity auctions to clean inflated tech evaluations from Everhart Vector before their quarterly SEC audits. He was washing twenty million dollars every six months."

"It's worse than that," Marcus added, pulling up a secondary document on the screen. "Lucas didn't just launder the funds. He promised Madison Vale an eight percent finder's fee disguised as public relations consulting retainers. The Vale family wasn't just complicit; Grant Vale used his broadcast channels to run puff pieces on Everhart Vector to drive the stock price up before the audits."

Claire looked up, her gray eyes narrowing with cold comprehension. "So when Madison attacked me tonight... it wasn't just petty jealousy because she thought a waitress was looking at Lucas. She was nervous. She knew Lucas was unraveling, and she was terrified that someone in the room was paying attention."

"She thought she could exert dominance to make herself feel safe," Nathaniel said, taking a sip from Claire’s tea mug on the counter. "A classic habit of the incompetent. Marcus, where are they now?"

"Lucas retreated to his penthouse in Belltown. Our security teams report that moving boxes were delivered there thirty minutes ago. He appears to be packing liquid assets—watches, foreign bearer bonds, and hard drives." Marcus paused, a thin, ruthless smile touching his lips. "As for Miss Vale, she retreated to the hotel bar downstairs to drown her sorrows in vintage bourbon. She has been on Instagram Live for the past fifteen minutes, weeping, claiming she was assaulted by an unhinged staff member and that a corrupt billionaire is using his corporate power to silence her."

Claire raised an eyebrow. "She’s broadcasting?"

"She is," Marcus confirmed. "She currently has eighty thousand viewers. She has omitted the fact that she tore your dress, omitted her father’s impending insolvency, and is framing this as an attack on an innocent woman by the ruthless Everhart monopoly."

Nathaniel’s eyes turned to flint. "Shut down the broadcast."

"No," Claire interrupted, her hand lightly touching Nathaniel’s sleeve. "Leave it up."

Nathaniel looked down at her, his brow arching in surprise. "Claire, she is dragging your name through the gutter of public gossip."

"Let her dig the grave deeper, Nate," Claire said, a chilling calm settling over her features. "In public relations, you never interrupt your enemy while they are busy executing themselves. Tomorrow morning, Grant Vale lands in Seattle. He will think he can use his television networks to blackmail us into dropping the debt demand. He will think he holds the court of public opinion."

She set the tablet down on the marble island with a soft click.

"I want the press conference scheduled for ten o'clock sharp in the Cascade Crown grand ballroom," Claire commanded, her authority as natural and unyielding as Helena Vance's or any great matriarch who had ever commanded an empire. "Invite every major network. Invite the Department of Justice’s regional press liaison. And make sure Grant Vale and his daughter have front-row seats."

Marcus looked from Claire to Nathaniel, awaiting the final nod.

Nathaniel looked at his wife, a deep, fierce pride blazing in his chest. He raised two fingers. "You heard the chairwoman, Marcus. Coordinate with the federal prosecutors. And ensure the ballroom security cameras from tonight are uploaded to our secure servers in raw, uncompressed 4K."

"Right away, sir." Marcus bowed and exited, the door clicking firmly shut behind him.

Nathaniel stepped back to Claire, sliding his hands along her jawline, lifting her face so their eyes met. "You are far too merciful, my love."

"I’m not merciful at all," Claire murmured, rising on her tiptoes to press her lips softly against his. "I just prefer my executions to be televised."
