Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

While the boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor operated with the cold efficiency of a corporate abattoir, three miles away in the trendy neighborhood of Belltown, Lucas Everhart was descending into pure, unadulterated madness.

The multi-level penthouse apartment was in a state of absolute ruin.

Expensive bespoke suits were thrown haphazardly across the Italian leather sofas. Drawers had been ripped from the master bedroom vanity and dumped onto the floor. Three open aluminum flight cases sat on the dining table, packed with stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills, velvet pouches containing high-end Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet watches, and four different diplomatic passports Lucas had acquired through back-channel contacts in Montenegro.

Lucas was sweating profusely through his linen shirt, his tie discarded on the rug, his hair sticking to his forehead in damp clumps. His hands shook so violently that he dropped a sleeve of Krugerrand gold coins, sending them clattering across the imported hardwood.

"Damn it! Damn it!" he screamed, kicking a fallen chair into the glass coffee table, shattering it into a spiderweb of cracks.

His private encrypted phone rang from the counter.

Lucas dove for it, pressing the screen to his ear with trembling fingers. "Hello?! Did the private charter clear the flight plan for Vancouver?"

“Lucas.”

The voice on the other end was not his pilot. It was cool, smooth, and intimately familiar.

Lucas froze, the phone slipping slightly against his sweaty ear. "Claire?"

“Your jet has been grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration at King County International,” Claire’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and entirely unhurried. “A maintenance lock was placed on the tail number forty minutes ago. If you attempt to board it, Homeland Security will arrest you on the tarmac.”

"You bitch," Lucas hissed, his voice dropping into a guttural, venomous rasp as panic stripped away his polished exterior. "You planned this! You’ve been playing the quiet, supportive little trophy wife for three years, pretending you didn't care about the family business, while you snuck around my company like a damn spy!"

“I didn't need to sneak, Lucas,” Claire replied calmly over the line. “You were sloppy. You were so busy obsessing over Nathaniel—so consumed by your jealousy of what he built—that you left a paper trail a first-year accounting student could have followed. You stole money meant for pediatric cancer wards to fund your failing tech venture.”

"He stole everything from my father!" Lucas screamed, pacing the length of his ruined living room, knocking over a crystal decanter of scotch. "Everhart Global should have been a joint partnership! Nate’s father pushed mine out of the board thirty years ago! I was taking back what was rightfully mine!"

“Your father was caught embezzling from the steel foundries in Pittsburgh,” Claire said, her tone devoid of sympathy. “Nathaniel’s father gave him a twenty-million-dollar severance to walk away quietly instead of sending him to federal prison. Your family has always been rotten, Lucas. Greed is the only language you speak.”

Lucas stopped pacing. A wild, dangerous glint entered his bloodshot eyes. He looked down at the dining table, where an encrypted flash drive sat next to his car keys—a secondary backup he had pulled from his private safe.

"You think you won?" Lucas laughed, a ragged, unhinged sound that bounced off the high concrete walls. "You think Nate is untouchable? On this drive, I have the complete financial architecture of Everhart Global’s defense contracts with the European Union. If I leak this to the press, Nathaniel’s stock will drop forty percent by market close! Everhart Global will bleed billions!"

A brief pause hung on the line.

Then, another voice entered the call. Deep, resonant, and dripping with contempt.

“Leak it.”

Lucas’s breath caught in his throat. "Nate?"

“Go ahead, Lucas,” Nathaniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Release the defense files. Show the world that my company developed the satellite encryption software currently protecting allied airspace. You think that will damage my stock? The Pentagon will classify the leak within twelve seconds, revoke your citizenship under the Espionage Act, and designate you an enemy combatant before your plane could even reach international waters.”

Lucas swallowed hard, the phone shaking violently in his grip. The cold logic of Nathaniel’s words hit him like a physical blow. He had no leverage. He had never had leverage. He had been playing checkers against grandmasters who owned the board.

“You have ten minutes, Lucas,” Nathaniel continued. “You can walk out of that lobby with your hands raised and surrender to the agents waiting on the sidewalk. Or you can force them to breach your door. Either way, your life as an Everhart is over.”

The line went dead with a soft click.

Lucas stood frozen in the center of his luxury apartment, the silence rushing back in to drown him. He looked down at the gold, the cash, the passports—worthless pieces of metal and paper that could not buy him a single second of freedom.

From the street below, the wail of approaching sirens began to rise, echoing off the high-rises of Belltown.

Lucas closed his eyes, dropped the phone onto the shattered glass, and slumped into the ruins of his empire.
