Chapter 4 - The Ambush & The Dark Betrayal

The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated chaos.

Don Vincent Moretti didn't wait for the Council’s judgment. He pulled a concealed pistol from his coat, screaming at his personal guards: “Kill them! Kill them all!”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Gunfire shattered the crystal mirrors of the St. Regis ballroom.

Declan reacted instantly. He grabbed Aria by the waist, flipping the heavy mahogany table onto its side, creating an impenetrable wooden barrier between them and the Moretti shooters.

“Cassian! Move!” Declan bellowed, pulling a customized semi-automatic weapon from his shoulder holster.

Rossi guards opened fire from the doorway, engaging Moretti’s men in a furious, close-quarters gunfight. Screams, shattering glass, and the smell of cordite filled the room as elder Dons scrambled for the emergency exits.

Declan fired three precise shots over the edge of the overturned table, dropping two of Vincent’s shooters before they could flank their position.

“Aria, stay low!” Declan commanded, keeping his body positioned between her and the flying lead.

Aria didn't panic. Four years of surviving in the shadows had given her an iron nerve. She spotted a fallen guard’s gun lying three feet away on the carpet. Without hesitation, she reached out, grabbed the weapon, checked the magazine with a smooth, practiced motion, and racked the slide.

Declan looked at her, a brief flash of sheer pride and astonishment lighting up his dark eyes. “Where did you learn that?”

“I lived in Queens for four years, Declan,” Aria said grimly. “You learn how to handle a gun or you don't survive.”

“That’s my girl,” Declan growled softly.

“Declan! They’re retreating toward the fire stairs!” Cassian shouted, providing cover fire from the doorway. “Don Vincent and Isabella are fleeing!”

“Don’t let them reach the street!” Declan ordered.

Holding Aria securely by the hand, Declan led his men through the smoke-filled ballroom, chasing the fleeing Moretti faction down the concrete service stairwell of the hotel.

They burst out through the rear loading dock into the alleyway.

Rain was pouring heavily from the dark sky. A black armored SUV belonging to the Moretti family was speeding down the alley toward the main street.

Don Vincent Moretti was hanging out of the rear passenger window, firing wildly back toward the loading dock to cover his escape.

“Declan!” Aria yelled, pointing toward the street.

Declan stepped out into the rain, unbothered by the bullets ricocheting off the brick walls. He raised his weapon, aimed calmly at the rear tire of the speeding SUV, and pulled the trigger twice.

Pfft! Pfft!

The rear tire exploded into shreds of rubber. The heavy SUV swerved violently on the slick pavement, slamming sideways into a steel dumpster before crashing into the brick wall of the opposite building with a sickening crunch of metal.

Smoke poured from the crushed engine bay.

Declan walked slowly down the alley, his heavy leather shoes splashing through rain puddles, his gun held loosely at his side. Aria walked right beside him, her hand holding her sidearm, her jaw set in determination.

Cassian and six Rossi guards surrounded the wrecked vehicle, weapons drawn.

The rear door was kicked open from the inside.

Vincent Moretti stumbled out into the rain, bleeding heavily from a wound on his forehead, his arm broken. Behind him, Isabella crawled out, coughing violently, her white suit ruined, her hair wild and covered in glass shards.

Vincent fell to his knees in the wet alley, gasping for air, looking up at the towering figure of Declan Rossi approaching him like the Grim Reaper.

“Declan... wait...” Vincent begged, coughing up blood. “We can... we can negotiate... think of the business... the docks...”

Declan stopped three feet away from the ruined Don.

He didn't look angry. He looked entirely emotionless—the terrifying manifestation of absolute judgment.

“You stole four years of my wife’s life, Vincent,” Declan said, his voice quiet, steady, and colder than the rain falling around them. “You made her sleep in dark rooms. You made her scrub floors. You made her believe I had forgotten her.”

Declan slowly raised his weapon, leveling the barrel directly at Vincent Moretti’s forehead.

“Declan, no! Please!” Isabella shrieked from the ground, crawling toward him, grabbing the hem of his trousers. “Don’t kill my father! I’ll do anything! I’ll leave the city! I’ll never come back! Please!”

Declan didn't even look down at her. With a flick of his boot, he kicked her hand away.

Vincent looked up into Declan’s dark eyes, realizing that no amount of money, power, or political alliances could save him now.

“Any last words, Don Vincent?” Declan asked softly.

Vincent spat blood onto the wet pavement, his eyes flashing with bitter hatred. “She’s a curse, Declan... she will ruin you...”

Bang.

A single shot echoed through the narrow alleyway, drowning out the sound of the falling rain.

Vincent Moretti collapsed sideways onto the wet pavement, lifeless.

Isabella screamed in pure horror, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably beside her father’s body.

Declan lowered his weapon, turning his head to look at Cassian.

“Take Isabella into custody,” Declan commanded coldly. “Hand her over to the federal authorities along with the evidence of her family’s human trafficking and dock smuggling operations. Let her spend the rest of her miserable life in a federal prison cell.”

“Yes, Don Declan,” Cassian bowed, dragging the weeping Isabella away into a waiting Rossi security vehicle.

Declan turned around and walked over to Aria.

The rain had soaked through his dark suit and her silk dress, but neither of them cared.

Declan reached out, wrapping his large, warm hands around her face, pulling her close until his eyes were inches from hers.

“It’s over, Aria,” Declan whispered, his dark eyes shining with raw, overwhelming devotion. “The monsters are gone. You’re safe.”

May you like

Aria looked up at him, the heavy weight that had rested on her chest for four long years finally dissolving into the cool night air. She let out a shaky sigh, resting her hands against his chest, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart.

“Take me home, Declan,” she whispered gently. “Take me home.”
