Chapter 4 - THE TRAP CLOSESThe buzzing fluorescent light overhead flickered, casting erratic shadows across Adam’s face as he descended the concrete stairs. The easygoing, smiling son Clara had raised was gone, replaced by a calculating stranger whose eyes mirrored absolute sociopathy.

"Adam," Clara said, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to keep it steady. She stood up slowly from her kneeling position in front of the cage, placing her body between him and the trapped children. "Put that wrench down. What in God's name are you doing? Who are these children?!"
Adam stopped halfway down the stairs, tapping the heavy iron tool against his palm with a slow, rhythmic clink... clink... clink. A humorless, chilling smirk touched the corners of his mouth.
"They’re investments, Mom," Adam said smoothly, as if discussing stock portfolios over breakfast. "Brooke and I realized early on that a standard 9-to-5 engineering salary isn't enough to maintain a proper lifestyle in this economy. High-end content creation is where the real money is. People online are willing to pay astronomical subscription fees for exclusive, uncompromised access to... well, let's just call them behavioral adjustment streams."
"You sick, depraved monster," Clara hissed, venom lacing every word. "They’re babies! They’re human beings!"
"They’re commodities," Adam corrected sharply, his eyes narrowing. "And unfortunately for you, Mom, you just breached a proprietary network. Do you have any idea how many powerful people are logging into those servers right now? If this gets out, my life—and my freedom—is over."
"Your freedom ended the moment you locked an innocent child in a cage!" Clara shouted, her hand subtly sliding behind her back, searching the folding table for anything she could use as a weapon. Her fingers brushed against the smooth, heavy plastic body of a professional camera tripod.
Adam took another step down. "I loved you, Mom. I really did. But you just couldn't mind your own business, could you? Why couldn't you just eat your hotdog, drink your iced tea, and let things be? Maisie was learning how to keep her mouth shut. You had to go playing detective."
"Where is Brooke?" Clara asked, stalling for time, her fingers tightening around the leg of the tripod behind her. "Does she know you're down here planning to murder your own mother?"
Adam laughed—a short, dry bark that held no humor at all. "Brooke is the one who managed the backend finances while I handled acquisitions. We’re a team, Mom. And right now, Brooke is out on the patio distracting the neighbors and the rest of the family, making sure nobody comes looking for you."
"They will look for me," Clara said defiantly. "The moment I don't come out—"
"They won't," Adam interrupted, stepping off the bottom stair onto the concrete floor, closing the distance between them. "We’ve practiced this contingency plan three times already. We’re going to tell everyone that you suffered a severe dizzy spell, slipped down the basement stairs while sleepwalking or exploring, and tragically broke your neck. The police will investigate an accidental fall in an elderly woman, close the case, and life will go on."
He raised the iron wrench, his muscles tensing.
Clara didn't wait. With a roar of adrenaline born from pure maternal fury, she whipped the heavy metal tripod out from behind her and swung it with all her might, smashing it directly across Adam’s jaw.
CRACK.
Adam stumbled backward, emitting a sharp cry of shock as the heavy blow knocked him off balance. He dropped the wrench, crashing hard onto a stack of plastic storage bins.
"Run!" Clara screamed to the children in the cage, turning around and using the heavy brass key still in the lock to frantically jiggle the padlocks of Leo's cage, though she knew the keys wouldn't fit. "Hold on, babies, I’ll find a way to get you out!"
Before she could strike Adam again, a heavy shadow fell across the top of the stairwell.
Brooke stood at the top of the stairs, her face twisted in a mask of feral panic, holding a heavy glass bottle of industrial solvent in her hand.
"Adam! Get up, you idiot!" Brooke shrieked, hurling the heavy bottle straight down the stairs at Clara.
The glass shattered against the concrete just inches from Clara’s feet, sending sharp shards flying and splashing caustic, burning liquid across her ankles. Clara cried out in pain as the fumes stung her eyes.
Adam scrambled back to his feet, wiping blood from his split lip, his eyes blazing with murderous rage. He lunged forward, grabbing Clara by the shoulders and slamming her violently against the concrete wall.
"You crazy old bitch!" Adam snarled, his hands tightening around her throat, cutting off her air supply. "You just signed your own death warrant!"

As Clara’s vision began to blur at the edges, a tiny, high-pitched scream echoed from the top of the stairs.
"STOP IT! LEAVE MY GRANDMA ALONE!"
