Chapter 5 - THE LITTLE HERO AND THE SIRENSClara’s vision was darkening into pinpricks of light as Adam’s fingers tightened around her throat. Her lungs burned for oxygen, her hands clawing desperately at his wrists, but his grip was like a steel vice.

Suddenly, Adam’s chokehold slackened. A sharp, piercing shriek tore through the air, followed by the sound of heavy blows raining down on Adam’s back.
"Get off her! Bad Daddy! Bad Daddy!"
Four-year-old Maisie was standing right on Adam’s back, hammering her small fists against his shoulders, kicking wildly with her little sandals, tears streaming down her flushed face.
Adam roared in pain and surprise, releasing Clara’s neck as he stumbled backward, trying to shake the little girl off. "Get off me, you little brat!"
Clara collapsed onto the dusty concrete, gasping violently, sucking in huge, burning lungfuls of air as she coughed uncontrollably. Through her blurred vision, she saw Brooke rushing down the stairs, screaming hysterically, trying to pull Maisie off Adam.
"Adam, grab her! The neighbors are looking over the fence, someone’s coming up the driveway!" Brooke shrieked, panic cracking her polished veneer.
Adam grabbed Maisie roughly by the arm, hoisting the crying child into the air. "We’re running," he panted, his face bruised and bleeding from Clara’s tripod strike. "We pack the servers, grab the kids from the cages, and take the back road to the Interstate. Move!"
"No! No! Grandma!" Maisie screamed, kicking her legs out.
Clara forced herself up onto her hands and knees, ignoring the searing pain in her throat and ankles. She couldn't let them take Maisie. She couldn't let them hurt those poor children in the cages.
Just as Adam turned toward the back exit door leading to the yard, a sound echoed from the front of the house that made the blood freeze in Adam and Brooke’s veins.
WEE-WOO. WEE-WOO. WEE-WOO.
The unmistakable, ear-splitting howl of police sirens cut through the suburban afternoon air, rapidly multiplying until multiple cruisers swarmed the front driveway, their red-and-blue strobe lights flashing violently through the small basement windows.
Brooke froze, dropping her car keys on the floor. "The police... who called the police?!"
Clara let out a ragged, triumphant cough, pushing herself up against the wall. "I did," she rasped, holding up her smart wrist-watch. "Before I came down the stairs, I hit the silent panic button linked to my home security system and local dispatch. They’ve been recording everything on cloud audio since I opened the front door."
Adam’s face turned the color of ash. He looked from Clara to the basement door, where heavy, tactical boots were already stomping across the kitchen floor.
"Drop the child! Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!" a booming voice echoed down the stairwell.
Before Adam could move toward the door, two heavily armed state troopers rushed down the stairs, their service weapons drawn and aimed squarely at his chest.
"Down on the ground! Do it now!" the lead officer bellowed.
Adam slowly raised his hands, letting Maisie drop gently to the floor. Maisie didn't hesitate for a second—she sprinted across the concrete, threw her small arms around Clara’s waist, and buried her face in her grandmother's coat, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I've got you, sweetheart, I've got you," Clara whispered, burying her face in Maisie’s hair as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped onto Adam and Brooke’s wrists with a sharp, definitive metallic ring.
As the officers swarmed the room, cutting the padlocks off Leo’s cage and wrapping warm emergency blankets around the traumatized children, Clara looked up at the flashing lights outside, knowing the nightmare was finally over.
