Chapter 3 - The Mother-In-Law’s Reality CheckAcross town in an exclusive gated community in Hillsborough, Mrs. Lawson senior—Margaret Lawson—was sitting in her sunroom sipping mimosas, expecting her son to arrive with news that he had successfully put that “peasant” Evelyn and her mother in their place.

Margaret had spent her entire life cultivating an image of aristocratic superiority, looking down on anyone who didn’t possess old money or a pedigree. She had coached Garrett relentlessly, feeding his ego, encouraging him to treat Evelyn as a trophy wife while secretly siphoning funds from his accounts to support her own extravagant lifestyle.
The front doorbell rang. Loudly. Insistently.
Frowning, Margaret set her crystal glass down and signaled her housekeeper to answer it. A moment later, instead of her son, two heavily armed private security guards and a stern-faced woman in a charcoal-grey pantsuit stepped uninvited into the foyer.
“Excuse me!” Margaret shrieked, marching out of the sunroom, her diamond rings flashing in the morning light. “Who gave you permission to enter this house? Get out before I call the police!”
The woman in the pantsuit—Elena Vance, Evelyn’s aunt and head of Vance Global’s real property acquisitions—slowly pulled a thick stack of legal documents from a leather briefcase.
“You don’t need to call the police, Mrs. Lawson,” Elena said, her voice dripping with glacial polite contempt. “The police are already aware of the situation. I am here to execute an immediate writ of possession and asset seizure.”
Margaret froze, her brow furrowing in confusion. “Possession? Asset seizure? What are you babbling about? This house is owned by my son! It was purchased under Lawson Holdings!”
“Purchased using initial seed capital provided through a shell corporation fully owned by Vance Global,” Elena corrected smoothly, stepping further into the marble foyer. “Furthermore, because Lawson Innovations has defaulted on all corporate liabilities, cross-collateralization clauses have triggered immediate liens on every personal asset registered under Garrett Lawson and his immediate dependents—including this estate, your vehicles, your bank accounts, and your jewelry collection.”
Margaret gasped, clutching her pearls. “That’s impossible! My son is a tech mogul! He’s a billionaire!”
“Your son was a parasite living off his wife’s inheritance,” Elena replied coldly. “And now, the host has detached.”
Before Margaret could scream another protest, the front doors swung open again, and a team of professional movers marched in with large plastic bins.
“What is the meaning of this? You can’t do this to me! I demand to speak to Evelyn! That ungrateful little wretch!” Margaret shrieked, running toward the stairs as the movers began systematically packing up the luxury artwork, designer furniture, and crystal decanters in the living room.

“Evelyn is busy being a mother and running a multi-national conglomerate,” Elena said without looking back. “You, Mrs. Lawson, have exactly two hours to pack your personal clothing into two suitcases and vacate the premises. After that, the locks will be changed.”
Margaret stared in horror as a security guard politely but firmly stood in front of the grand staircase, blocking her path upward. The illusion of her untouchable social standing was crumbling around her in real time. For the first time in her life, Margaret Lawson realized that her arrogance had no armor strong enough to withstand the absolute wrath of the woman she had so casually deemed a “peasant.”
