Chapter 4 - The Courtroom and the Iron ShieldThe family court division of the San Francisco Superior Court was packed to capacity. Word had leaked that Evelyn Vance—the reclusive, fiercely private heiress of Vance Global—was locked in a high-stakes divorce and custody battle against her disgraced tech-entrepreneur husband, Garrett Lawson.

Garrett sat at the defense table looking like a ghost of his former self. His expensive custom suit was rumpled, his hair unwashed, and his eyes darting frantically around the courtroom. He had gone through three different high-priced legal teams in two weeks; two had dropped him once they realized there were no funds left to pay their retainers, and the third was a public defender who looked completely out of his depth against the armada of legal talent sitting across the aisle.

At the plaintiff table sat Evelyn. She wore a flawless, midnight-blue Chanel pantsuit. Her posture was straight, her expression serene and unreadable. Beside her sat her mother—now dressed in elegant, high-end silk, her forehead healed from the scrape, holding her grandson’s small hand gently.

The Honorable Judge Henderson adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick stacks of briefs submitted by both sides before clearing his throat.

“We are here today to review the petition for dissolution of marriage, permanent sole custody, asset division, and protective orders filed by Evelyn Vance-Lawson against Garrett Lawson,” Judge Henderson announced, his voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls. “Mr. Lawson, your legal counsel has filed motions contesting the custody arrangement and requesting a fifty-percent split of marital assets. How do you respond?”

Garrett leaped to his feet before his public defender could stop him.

“Your Honor, it’s a setup!” Garrett cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. “She ambushed me! She hid her true identity for years, trapping me in a marriage under false pretenses! She manipulated the financial records to make it look like my company failed, and now she’s trying to steal my son! I am a fit father! I provide—!”

“Mr. Lawson, sit down,” Judge Henderson commanded sharply, banging his gavel. “You will address the court through proper decorum, or you will be held in contempt.”

Garrett swallowed hard, trembling as he slowly sat back down.

Evelyn’s lead counsel, Marcus Vance, stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked toward the center of the well, carrying a single encrypted flash drive.

“Your Honor, the petitioner submits into evidence comprehensive forensic accounting records, authenticated video footage from the christening incident, and signed confessions from corporate officers detailing systematic financial mismanagement and abusive behavior,” Marcus stated smoothly.

He plugged the flash drive into the courtroom’s digital evidence port. Within seconds, the large courtroom screens flickered to life.

The video of the christening played for the entire court to see.

The crystal chandeliers, the gathering of VIP guests, the trembling figure of Evelyn’s elderly mother walking toward an empty chair—and then, the malicious, deliberate kick of the chair leg by Garrett Lawson, followed by his vicious sneer: “Trash should know its proper place... I won’t let you contaminate my son with your trailer-park stink.”

A collective wave of audible disgust swept through the courtroom gallery. Even Judge Henderson closed his eyes for a brief moment, rubbing the bridge of his nose in sheer disbelief at the cruelty on display.

When the video ended, Marcus clicked to the next slide: a detailed breakdown of financial contributions.

“As the court can clearly see, Mr. Lawson contributed zero dollars of personal capital to his startup,” Marcus continued. “Every asset, every vehicle, every square foot of real estate, and every corporate share was purchased using trust funds exclusively settled under Ms. Vance’s pre-marital inheritance. Furthermore, we present certified medical records documenting chronic psychological distress inflicted upon our client during the marriage.”

Garrett’s public defender stood up weakly, holding a single piece of paper. “Your Honor... my client requests a recess to review these documents—we haven't had adequate time—”

“Denied, Counsel,” Judge Henderson said flatly. He looked directly at Garrett, his gaze hard as flint.

“Mr. Lawson,” the judge said, his voice ringing with judicial authority. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such egregious abuse of hospitality, unmitigated arrogance, and financial parasitism. You abused your wife, you assaulted her elderly mother in public, and you attempted to hide behind a facade of corporate success built entirely on another person’s generosity.”

Garrett slumped forward, burying his face in his hands as the judge delivered the final verdict.

“Petition for dissolution granted on grounds of extreme cruelty and irreconcilable differences. Full, unconditioned sole physical and legal custody of the minor child is awarded to Evelyn Vance. All marital assets, corporate holdings, and disputed properties are assigned exclusively to the petitioner. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued prohibiting Mr. Lawson from coming within five hundred yards of Ms. Vance, her mother, or her child.”

The gavel fell. The finality of the sound echoed like a gunshot through the room.

Garrett Lawson’s life was officially over.
