Chapter 3 - The Forensic TrailThe air in the supply closet was thick with a sudden, suffocating silence.

Maya Reed’s eyes dropped to the crumpled piece of paper on the floor. It was a discarded backing from a sterile adhesive strip—the kind used to seal laboratory transport tubes.

She looked back up at Ryan.

"Mr. Collins," Maya said, her voice very cold and very steady. "Empty your right coat pocket."

"I will do no such thing," Ryan hissed, his eyes darting to the security guards in the hallway. "This nurse is out of her mind. She’s letting a child run this ward. I want Dr. Park up here now."

"Dr. Park is already on her way," Maya said, not taking her eyes off his pocket. "But if you don't empty that pocket, I will have these officers detain you for theft of medical property and tampering with a forensic sample."

Ryan didn't move. His hand remained hooked near his belt, his fingers twitching.

One of the security guards, a veteran officer named Henderson, stepped into the closet. "Sir, please. Just show us what’s in the pocket so we can clear this up."

With a slow, deliberate movement that looked like a snake uncoiling, Ryan reached into his charcoal wool coat.

He pulled his hand out.

In his palm lay a small, transparent biohazard transport bag. Inside the bag was a single, purple-top vacutainer tube filled with dark red blood. The printed label on the tube read: BABY BOY COLLINS - ROOM 308 - CORD BLOOD.

But the seal on the bag had been sliced open with a razor, and a small, blue-tipped plastic swab—a standard commercial buccal swab used for home DNA tests—was taped to the side of the tube.

"I was just securing the sample," Ryan said, his voice smooth again, though a bead of sweat was tracing a path down his temple. "The nurse left it on the cart. In a hospital of this size, things get lost. I wanted to make sure our family’s genetic record was protected."

"You stole a clinical specimen from a locked cart," Maya said, her voice filled with a deep, professional disgust. "And you contaminated it with a non-sterile collection device. That is a federal offense under the Medical Privacy and Safety Act."

She reached out and snatched the bag from his hand before he could pull it back.

"Henderson," Maya said to the guard. "Escort Mr. Collins to the security office. He is not to leave the hospital grounds until the police arrive."

"You can't do this!" Ryan shouted, his face turning a dark, mottled red as Henderson grabbed his upper arm. "I am the father! I have the legal right to any specimen from that child!"

"The mother is the sole legal guardian of a newborn until a paternity declaration is signed and filed with the state of Texas," Maya said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, quiet satisfaction. "And right now, Laura Collins is the only one who has the right to authorize any genetic testing."

As the guards began to drag Ryan down the hall, his voice echoed back through the quiet ward.

"You're a fool, Laura!" he screamed toward Room 308. "You're going to lose everything! I'll make sure you don't get a single dime!"

Emma watched him go, her body finally starting to shake so hard she had to sit back down on the linen basket.

Maya knelt beside her, placing a warm hand on her shoulder.

"He's gone, Emma," Maya said softly. "You did it. You saved him."

Emma looked down at Noah, who had finally fallen back asleep, his tiny thumb resting near his mouth.

"Is my mom going to be okay?" Emma whispered.

"She’s going to be fine," Maya promised. "But we have a lot of work to do before she wakes up."
