Chapter 5 - The Battle for Room 308

At 7:00 a.m., the sun broke over the horizon, filling Room 308 with a warm, golden light.

Laura Collins slowly opened her eyes, her face still pale from the anesthesia. She looked toward the window, where Emma sat in a chair, her small hand holding a warm cup of broth.

"Emma?" Laura whispered, her voice dry and cracked.

"I’m here, Mom," Emma said, instantly setting the cup down and leaning over the bed.

"Where... where is Noah?" Laura asked, her eyes darting around the sterile room. "Is he... did he make it?"

"He’s in the nursery, Mom," Emma said, a beautiful, genuine smile breaking across her face. "He’s small, but the doctors say his lungs are strong. He’s going to be okay."

The door opened, and Ryan walked into the room.

He was accompanied by a tall, sharp-faced woman in a gray business suit—his personal family law attorney, Eleanor Vance. Ryan’s face was smooth, his eyes clear and devoid of the fury from the night before.

"Laura, sweetheart," Ryan said, stepping toward the bed with his hands open in a gesture of gentle concern. "Thank God you're awake."

Laura’s body tensed, her hand gripping Emma’s tightly. "Ryan... what’s going on? The nurse said there was an incident last night."

"Emma had a small panic attack, Laura," Ryan said smoothly, his voice dropping into that familiar, patronizing register. "She took the baby from the bassinet and hid him. The hospital staff overreacted, of course. They even called the police."

He sighed, shaking his head with a look of heavy, paternal exhaustion. "But don't worry. I’ve handled everything. Eleanor is here to help us file the temporary custody and protection orders so we can get Noah home as soon as he’s discharged."

"We’ve already prepared the documents, Mrs. Collins," Eleanor Vance said, sliding a thick blue folder onto the bedside table. "Due to the... unstable environment on the ward last night, we believe it’s best to establish Ryan’s temporary custody over both children immediately. It will protect your assets from any liability claims from the hospital."

"No," Emma said, stepping between the attorney and her mother’s bed. "Don't sign anything, Mom."

"Emma, go to the waiting room," Ryan said, his voice dropping its warmth, a cold edge creeping back in.

"She’s stay right here," a voice called from the doorway.

Maya Reed walked into the room, followed by Detective Marcus Thorne of the Austin Police Department.

"Mr. Collins," Detective Thorne said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for medical theft, tampering with forensic evidence, and child endangerment."

"This is ridiculous!" Eleanor Vance shouted, stepping in front of her client. "My client is the father of that child! He cannot be charged with theft of his own son’s medical records!"

"He isn't the father," Maya said, stepping forward and handing a sealed white envelope directly to Laura.

Laura opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Her eyes traced the printed lines of the DNA report, her breath catching as she reached the bottom of the page.

"Thomas..." Laura whispered, a single, brilliant tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. "It’s Thomas’s baby."

"That's a lie!" Ryan snarled, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage as he lunged toward the bed. "She was sleeping with him behind my back! She’s a whore! I'm not paying for that brat!"

Detective Thorne lunged forward, grabbing Ryan’s arm and pinning him against the wall before he could reach Laura. The handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final clink.

"You have the right to remain silent, Mr. Collins," Thorne said, dragging him toward the door.

As Ryan was led down the hall, his screams of fury echoing through the ward, the room finally fell into a quiet, peaceful silence.

Emma looked at her mother, her eyes filled with a deep, quiet strength.

"We’re safe now, Mom," Emma whispered.
