Chapter 4 - The Breach

The front door of the Vance residence didn't just open; it splintered into fragments as the tactical unit of the local police department blew the deadbolts with a hydraulic ram.

“Police! Search warrant! Drop your weapons!”

The roar of tactical officers flooded the hallway. Marcus, dropping the glowing iron bar in sheer panic, scrambled backward toward the interior garage door, desperately trying to find a way out. Helen froze like a deer caught in high beams, her mouth opening in a silent, toothless gasp as heavy-booted officers swarmed into the kitchen and living room.

Arthur Vance stood at the side utility door of the garage, having already smashed the small upper pane with his iron stake to unlatch the lock from the inside. He threw the heavy door open just as the tactical team breached the main entrance.

“In here! In the garage!” Arthur yelled, pointing frantically toward the floor.

Officer Miller, the lead tactical responder, surged into the garage with his assault rifle raised. The wave of heat and the thick, sickening smell of scorched flesh and tobacco hit him like a physical blow. He lowered his gaze to the floor and stopped dead in his tracks, a professional soldier momentarily paralyzed by the sheer barbarity of the scene.

Emily lay curled in a pool of blood and ash, completely unresponsive, her breathing shallow and ragged.

“Medic! We need a trauma rig in here right now! Code blue protocol!” Miller roared into his shoulder mic, dropping to his knees beside Emily. He pulled off his heavy tactical gloves, gently checking her pulse against her throat. It was thready, erratic, but present.

Marcus tried to scramble past a pair of officers in the hallway, screaming that he was a respected businessman, that his privacy was being violated, that his wife had fallen.

His protests ended abruptly when a pair of heavy steel handcuffs slammed onto his wrists, biting deep into his flesh as he was slammed hard against the drywall.

“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated domestic torture, and conspiracy to commit homicide,” the arresting officer barked, reading him his rights while shoving him face-first toward the floor.

Helen shrieked from the kitchen, clawing at the arms of the female officer who pinned her against the counter. “You can’t touch us! We own this property! My son is a pillar of this community! You have no proof!”

Detective Jenkins stepped into the kitchen, holding up a sleek tablet playing Arthur’s high-definition video footage on loop, complete with crystal-clear audio of Helen orchestrating the murder.

“We have twenty-four terabytes of proof, Mrs. Vance,” Jenkins said coldly, her eyes flashing with absolute disdain. “Every punch, every burn, every word out of your mouth. You recorded your own life sentence in 4K resolution.”
